I was thinking maybe we can have players find their own teammates. Kind of like in TT where players can choose which doubles partner they want to have. I think that kind of format had worked well for TT and some players might even be encouraged to invite other TF members (who's not playing the game yet) to join their team.

I thought about auction only after you suggesting the idea of choosing your own team .

If you guys know about IPL in cricket , they do this auction (here we can exchange players without money :-P) , kinda similar to the soccer exchanges ;-)

I think if you have 2-3 friends who want to play, they should be allowed to form a new team without being drafted

Maybe in the next event we can have that. The team captains for each team can ask ppl who wants to join their team. It can be first come, first serve basis for players who wants to join a team. If there are ppl who wants to form a new team then their nominated team captain will have to declare their team members (who have committed of course) and say if there's still an opening in their team. Just an idea.
