But this is an Asian play off. For Asian players.

The Aussies still get their own play off in December.

Exactly!

In fact in my opinion the French Open and Wimbledon goons should follow the Australian example and organize playoffs between scrubs in their neck of the woods (which means Europe + Africa).

Likewise the USTA should expand it's domestic USO-WC playoff opportunities to participants from Canada, Mexico...

I see no point why scrubs from only 4 countries should be the only ones getting free handouts year after year, especially since it's all wasted on the same players (Dellacqua, Mladenovic, Robson, Oudin...
.

Re: Australian Open to hold wildcard playoff in China

I know that of golf's majors, at least US Open and British Open have overseas qualifications. What if tennis slams had e.g. three overseas WG playoffs, in the Americas, Europe/Africa, and Asia/Pacific, and a national WG playoff.

I agree with you on this:

1. They should ban the cosy reciprocal wild cards between Roland Garros, the US and Australia.
2. I agree about the 'continental wild cards' idea, one wild card to go as follows, ie Australia to award one to Asia Pacific (but not Aus), US to give to player from Americas (but not USA), Wimbledon and RG to give one each to Euro-Africa (but not British or French).
3. They should also each award a wild card to the previous year's junior winner (or if they are in MD, the finalist).
4. The other six could be awarded by the grand slams as they saw fit, to their own nationals or not, but with this vital proviso: no player should be awarded more than one wild card in any of the four slams per 12 months. This would stop WCs going to the likes of Oudin and Barty for successive slams, so that should Oudin accept a Wimbledon wild card, she would be banned from receiving one at the following US Open for instance. Players are not allowed to use a protected ranking to enter a slam more than once, so the same rule should be applied for wild card.

Re: Australian Open to hold wildcard playoff in China

I think this is a good idea. If a WC is awarded to an asian player having playoffs is the best idea. Of course those playoffs would need to be opened to EVERY players from the asia-Pacific region exept Australians. Including New Zealand,Phillipines, China, Thailand,India,Japan, Indonesia..etc...or else it's stupid to only have Chinese players to have a chance.

That being said I have a hard time understanding the Asia-Pacific Grand Slam idea. I mean it's probably simply a marketing thing but isn't it simply the Australian Tennis Federation paying to organize the event? Chinese and other asian federation don'T put money in it right? I want the AO to stay in Australia, I think it'd be terrible if it was moved to Asia, there's history in Australia it needs to stay there.

Dokic won her WC pretty much on her own each years by playing the Play-Offs. Either winning it or going deep so it's normal to award her a WC.

You're contradicting yourself. Also you have a conclusion set in your mind and filling the middle to suit it.

First you're saying no WC play-off for own nation (if I understood correctly?), but then the GS can hand out WC's to it's own. It would be much better to give it to a play-off winner rather than some scrub who didn't deserve it.

Then this "no player should be awarded more than one wild card in any of the four slams per 12 months"
What about a junior wins 2 GS? What about someone wins a WC-Playoff and a junior GS?

Re: Australian Open to hold wildcard playoff in China

I understand what they are trying to do but at the same time I don't think it was really thought out. That's expected for an initial attempt though.
Niajing does have a beautiful complex that could be used in the future for a WTA tournament. Considering its one of the bigger cities that doesn't have a tennis tournament and there is a market probably for it in the eastern region, I can see this is an interesting marketing ploy.

The reason this wild card playoff is in October is because of Niajing's weather which would not be appropriate for tennis in December.
I see no problem with organizers doing this this year just to test the waters.
Honestly its not in the worse scheduling areas. Really if you have to think that you might not be able get direct entry to play the Australian Open at the end of the WTA season, you should attempt to play this wild card playoff anyway.

To be fair though, I still would like to see this wild card playoff in as neutral of a playing arena as possible in the near future.
Hong Kong in December comes to mind immediately. Its proximity to the majority of Asia makes for a fairer venue for most players who would like to enter this wild card playoff.
Plus they could get a bit of play out of that previous exhibition venue.
