Bingo. Kerber's groundstroke production is so shoddy that she can't be the aggressor in matches without collapsing into a pool of unforced errors - against hard-hitters, she can look amazing because she uses her great defensive skills and is able to just deflect their pace, especially on really quick surfaces where it's easier to absorb pace (e.g. quick indoors courts, or Cincinnati which is arguably the quickest outdoor hardcourt left) - but against a puffballer like Errani, on clay or a slow hardcourt like the US Open has been the last couple of years, it's always going to be hell for her. God help us if we ever have to witness her playing Niculescu

I'm prepared for all scenarios, I've already got Pavlyuchenkova lined up as a back-up (although I'm so close to putting her on probation, I don't stan for flops).

Well, I've still got Venus/Serena (Bet you're happy ). Then Kerber and Gorgeous who I've also liked for a while. And I'm officially on the Robson bandwagon.

But no one will EVER compare to Maria. EVER. I know it and feel it.

Well, tbh, if Robson and Kerber played tomorrow and lost, I wouldn't give a shit But I like them so I'd like to see them do well.

Hardcore stanning/emotional investment is solely reserved for The Queen.

Re: Tokyo 2012: Maria gets Fast and Furious in Tokyo

Not sure I could stan for anyone currently playing after Maria, Kerber the exception. I like loads of them but when it comes down to it they are just the opposition.
I'd be too used to routing against them, albeit only when Maria was playing them.

I might be able to stan for a couple of players simultaneously after Maria retires in 2040.

I'd be sad, sure, and I definitely wouldn't follow tennis nearly as close, but there are other players that I love to watch. Ivanovic was neck and neck with Maria on my faves list at one point, but she doesn't have the fighting qualities I thought she did. I still love her and admire her for keeping at it, but Maria's my #1. I also really like Serena (who Maria will outlive tennis-wise most-likely), Kerber, and Pavs when she's not being a fucking scrub.

Yep I agree. I'm so glad I've been along for the rollercoaster these past four years. RG this year was so special to me, and I don't think another tennis moment will ever top that.

It could be worse. You could have Ivanovic as your back-up. I dread the day that she may have to step up and be my one and only.

Sometimes I wonder why I put myself through this. I could have just picked Serena and be content with title after title, but for whatever reason, I chose Ana and now I'm stuck with her.

I feel your pain

You can't help who you like though. I pity the tennis fans who just root for the best because they win.

It never really felt like a choice. More like I was among the poor souls picked to suffer for the Queen's misdemeanors. Really sometimes it feels like a punishment more than anything. But then you get moments like RG and it feels GREAT like it's all been worth it and you get to see pressed souls let loose. Until of course it's time for the next shitfest.

I suspect there will be a short sigh of relief when she retires. As much as I stan for Ludmilla, I don't see myself getting too emotionally involved the same way I do for Maria. I won't allow it. It would be too cruel.

Re: Tokyo 2012: Maria gets Fast and Furious in Tokyo

I think if Maria retires tomorrow I would actually stop watching tennis and stop playing tennis.

I used to like so many players, like JJ was a very close second but she's been flopping. Don't really like anyone other than Maria these days. I don't mind Kerber, Goerges, Safarova, Zheng, Wickmayer etc. But I wouldn't go out of my way to watch their match like I would with Maria.

Re: Tokyo 2012: Maria gets Fast and Furious in Tokyo

Before Maria, Jennifer Capriati was my favorite. And then when Capriati had her injuries, is when Maria took over as my top favorite. But I always have plenty of others that I like and root for, but not like I do Maria. I liked Hingis, Harkleroad and Vaidisova until they all retired and now I like Azarenka (although not as much as I used to, since her and maria don't like seem to like each other), Wickmayer, Cibulkova, Pavs, Kirilenko, Goerges, Dokic (who is basically retired). But I don't like them like I do Maria. I had been thinking lately who would be the one I root for after Maria retires and I think I finally figured it out - Donna Vekic. She is from Croatia, 16, not too bad on the eyes. I have not actually seen her play, but it sounds like she might be the next big thing. She's 121 in the world and made it to her first WTA final last week, the youngest to do that in six years. My main favorite has to be a winner. I can't stand to lose.

Stop playing I'm not sure I can do that, well, definitely not in a near future.
I won't stop watching tennis there are still players I like watching but yeah noone will ever give me the passion Maria gave me way back in 2005, all those long nights stressing for her matches
I will watch tennis but I won't be emotionally involved like I'm with Maria.
