Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

At first, I thought Garber would have said Wozniacki being the biggest disappointment. Therefore, I do not agree with Garber on his analysis as she was still battling in the 2nd week of all Slams and did not have any bad losses.

Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

By the way, it's quite worth to mention that in tennis draw can seriously influence players achievements and even career development

Kvitova is 3-0 vs Radwanska and 4-2 (winning last 4 matches)vs Azarenka but was in Sharapova's half at AO, FO, Olympics and US Open and in Serena's quarter at Wimbledon ......

Nobody was waiting anything miraculous from Wozniacki. She was the biggest disappointment when was holding her №1 position but not meeting expectation of her fans and tennis world at Slams.

Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

She's had a solid season.

Disappointments are based on expectations. Expectations are subjective. She can't control what others expect of her. She has a lot of improvements to make but shes on the right track.

Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

Well given the YEC final last year everyone expected both Kvitova and Azarenka to dominate. It nearly happened if it weren't for Sharapova who seems to have Petra very well figured out nowadays. I still believe she will achieve much greater things in the near future but it seems Azarenka and Sharapova have become the dominant forces of the tour, with Our Lord Serena Williams having a firm grasp on their wigs. So it's really a case of Petra not having any room to ascend the rankings right now.

I hope we get one Azarenka-Kvitova match this year. It would be even greater if it happened at the YEC. Azarenka doesn't bother Kvitova AT ALL, and that match-up is quite fascinating. I would expect Petra to routine her again (after falling asleep in the 2nd set like she always does against Azarenka).

Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

In retrospect I'd say kvitova has had a solid year, making SF in 2 of the 4 slams and two titles won. That is more than acceptable for a top 5 player. She has never been a force on North American HC until she sort of became one this year, oddly. (Lol) But i suspect that has more to do with the big three not playing warm-up tournaments leading up to the US Open. Assuming she makes the YEC she will be indoors, her best surface and I expect her to put up respectable results again, maybe even win. I don't foresee Kvitova as a dominant player ever, fitness and consistency will always be an issue for her as well as motivation.

She will probably be the next Venus, a big favorite in Wimbledon and good runs here and there but not a big factor all throughout the season.

Transition year, that's what's happening. Next year she has no pressure. Plus she overplayed in the US Open series this year, she looked exhausted in NY...

Well that's partially true..but if Petra's dependant on luck of the draw to go far in tourneys, then it ain't good either. She has to cherish these battles..and I think she isn't always up to the challenge. When she's on, she's on..but she's to learn to win when she isn't on.

I expected her to dominate the tour for years and step into Williams shoes.

So yes - a top 5 ranking for a player with that potential is very disappointing!!
This.

You said it all.

There's nothing else for me to say.

Considering she's still young their is time to turn it around but I see no hunger when she plays. When you also consider the fact that Petra hates the limelight and doesn't really want people in her personal life it just adds more pressure. After she won Wimbledon it seemed like she just wanted to get the hell out of the stadium and go home.
I think that's a media creation cause she comes from a small town. Petra always seems to have fun, a glow about her and/or understand her responsibilities when she's with the media; especially now/lately.

Petra also seems to enjoy going out to Tennis or non-tennis related Gala's and black tie events, where there's a lot of camera and paparazzi. So I tend to disagree with that meme, notion.

As far as the private/personal affairs, name me one person that does? Even very public media whores like Donald Trump, get visibly and obnoxiously upset when people negatively get into their private lives. It's the same with Politicians, etc., and other public figures.

At least Petra didn't freak out the way Trump and other people have in the past. I think Petra will be fine in that respect. She's understanding "DA GAME" and her responsibilities in it.

Now she does have to deal with increased expectations, dedication, competitiveness, adding better team members/advisers and even more consistency. But those things should come in time, and maybe/probably even next year (Petra fans hope). She also needed to mature a little. And it appears she did (minus the scheduling snafu of Playing New Haven before the US Open) in North America this year.

Many people felt this would be her "taking it all in season", while many in the media expected her to dominate as well.

We'll see?

Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

For Petra this year was pretty good and consistent plus she finally done great in US but being Petra's fan for me disappointment was how she carelessly screwed up start of the season catching stupid cold which lead to disrupted conditioning rhythm what was cause to some injuries and slow start of the year and some easy losses later, also that's why general media forgot about her because there were bigger news to report like 26-0 run by Vika, Pova's career GS, super awesome summer by Rena

Re: Greg Garber(ESPN): "Petra Kvitova - the biggest disappointment"

I think everyone is hoping this is a "sophomore season" a la Hingis' 1998 (she probably played better tennis throughout 1999 and 2000, despite the slam in this year).

Obviously she has game, just give her a bit of time. Watching her at Wimbledon last year I thought Serena would need to get back to her very best if she wanted to win Wimbledon again. In the end Petra's defence wasn't even as impressive as Sharapova's or Davenport's defence of their Wimbledon titles.

Petra from Wimbledon 2011 vs. Serena at the Olympics 2012 would have been a good match.

They gave Petra all the publicity they needed at the end of the year, and she didn't deliver. Simple as that.

These reporters are not going to go out on a limb, then continually appear like fools with a player with only one major. That's not how it works

You make the news, when you win. Petra didn't win many majors.

I'm sure if she does next year, things will change again. In addition, she wouldn't be a disappointment, if they didn't expect much to begin with. So in a way, that's a good thing.

Call it a building block/transitional year.

And you're right about the start of her year. What the hell was her team doing sometimes, and does she hire as needed or have a full time hitting partner? I don't think she does, and if that's the case, that reprehensible for a top player that can afford it.

Her team and activities needs to be sorted out. I'm starting to wonder, if one of the reasons she did better last year, was because Adam was able to hit with her sometimes?
