Tennis ratings: Women's final best since 2002, bigger than men's

Although the men's was the highest since 2007.

More than 16 million watch Murray's U.S. Open win

CBS Sports says 16.2 million viewers caught all or part of Andy Murray's victory.
Mike Groll/AP

NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Murray's five-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open final was watched by more than 16 million on TV, an increase from last year's 11.8 million and the highest total since 2007.

CBS Sports says 16.2 million viewers caught all or part of Murray's 7-6 (10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 win. It was an increase of 4.4 million from Djokovic's victory against Rafael Nadal in the 2011 final and 10.3 million more than Nadal's victory over Djokovic two years ago, according to Nielsen numbers provided by the network.

The men's final was originally scheduled for Sunday but it was pushed back a day due to rain.

CBS Sports also said Tuesday that Serena Williams' three-set win against Victoria Azarenka on Sunday had 17.7 million viewers, the highest total for the women's final since 20.1 million for Serena's victory against sister Venus in 2002.

The Serena/Vika match was actually much better too. the 5 set slugathon was interminable with some very low quality tennis in the main.

As for Murray, who would have thought a boring minger woud attract more viewers in America than Nadal!

2002? Didn't Serena thrash someone in 2002?

Women's tennis is heading into a new Golden Age now and men's tennis will decline.

Re: Tennis ratings: Women's final best since 2002, bigger than men's

A lot more Americans watching TV this year? I think about half of the numbers came from VODs.

Yesterday’s men’s final at the National Tennis Center in New York, which was pushed to a Monday finish for the fifth consecutive year because of weather, was seen in an average of 2.3 percent of homes in the top 56 U.S. television markets, Jerry Caraccioli, a spokesman for the CBS Corp. (CBS) network, said in a telephone interview, citing Nielsen Holdings NV. (NLSN) That’s 12 percent lower than the 2.6 rating Djokovic’s four-set victory over Rafael Nadal in 2011 drew.

... Serena Williams’s fourth U.S. Open title two days ago, a three-set win over Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, drew a 3.4 major-market rating, 3 percent higher than a year earlier when Williams lost to Samantha Stosur in the final.

Also..

Due to the nature of live sports programming the ratings for CBS (US Open Overrun) are approximate and subject to more than the typical adjustments in the final numbers. See below for more information on these Fast Affiliate Ratings.

Note: Both of last night’s Monday Night Football games were simulcast on the CBS affiliate in the teams’ local markets (Baltimore, Cincinnati, Oakland and San Diego). As a result, CBS numbers may be a bit inflated and subject to more than typical adjustments in the finals.

Those numbers are for metered markets (cities) not overall viewers.

Re: Tennis ratings: Women's final best since 2002, bigger than men's

Yeah, cause Serena was in it

No one brings in the crowds on the womens side like Serena.

The WTA needs her and Sharapova to be in the finals to survive.

Sunday afternoon with a football game lead-in vs. Monday afternoon. The men's numbers are actually pretty good considering.

Re: Tennis ratings: Women's final best since 2002, bigger than men's

The most Hilarious is that all articles are entitled "More than 16 million watch Murray's U.S. Open win" and at the bottom of the artcile it is written that Serena Williams' three-set win against Victoria Azarenka on Sunday had 17.7 million viewers,

What a shame , such an ATPtards

Quote:

but still we are always comparing Saturday's women's ratings to Sunday's men's , it's not accurate either

Quote:
Women's tennis is heading into a new Golden Age now and men's tennis will decline.
two veterans and one new star are doing the show.... Stacey Allaster probably is praying for Vika to win more Slams and Rena and Masha to stay in the tour for the next 5 years (at least)
But the rest of the tour - only 9 wins vs top 3 ))))

PS : Who can open such a thread on MTF?

This should give pause to the chauvinists here and on the men's forum, who can't stop complaining about equal pay. And they are constantly carping about how women take away from the men and the WTA is NOT popular.

Re: Tennis ratings: Women's final best since 2002, bigger than men's

These numbers should give the USTA enough of a reason to switch its format to the Women's final on Sunday afternoon and the Men's on Monday afternoon. This will allow a day for each between the semis and final like all other slams. Its just better tennis, since typically each finalist has had a day of rest.

Poor Novak.

they have already announced that most probably Men's finals will be regularly on Mondays and there will be no Super Saturdays
