Pretty sure Sam sent the cleaning lady from her hotel to play the first set for her. Fortunately she turned up for the second and third, didn't face a single BP in those two sets.

took a look at the stats at the start of the 3rd set and it seems Virginie had no pb with Sam's first serve but couldn't deal with her 2nd serve (stats were reversed from what we generally see : Sam had won only 40% on first but more than 80% on 2nd  ).
BTW, why is Sam playing here ?  |

Sentimental reasons I think. She loves Japan, and won her first title here in 2009. She plays here every year, even last year after winning the USO.

You're probably right but even if she is not directly qualify for the YEC she could very well benefit from someone's withdrawal so I thought she'd get some rest.

Bartoli could still take the first alt spot if she reaches the final in Moscow. If Sam wins Osaka she'll have that sown up. I think she'd probably skip Moscow in that case.
