Architecture and Urban Planning.

Who's into architecture or urban planning?

What's your favorite building around the world? Most interesting city?
What changes would you make in your city, country?

Is there any architecture-related website you like?
Contemporist.com is great.

Re: Architecture.

I love Architecture! Been obsessed with it forever! I would have wanted to be an architect but I suck so bad at math and physics.

My favorite building in the world will always be the Empire State Building. However I also love the Chrysler Building, Petronas Towers, International Financial Center in Hong Kong, Bloomberg Tower, CitiGroup Tower in NYC, John Hancock Center in Chicago.

I am born and raised in New York City so architecture is in my blood.

I love Art Deco, International Style when done right, some post Modern.

I love the messageboards, Skyscraperpage.com, Skyscrapercity.com, wirednewyork.com.

I go around NYC and take photos of structures under construction and post on there.

Re: Architecture.

I was just going on about this an hour ago. I'm a transport nerd and I think urban planning is really underappreciated by the general populace in most cities/countries. I tend to like cities with an organic but ordered urban layout. I don't care for the grid system in most American cities. My favourite part of Manhattan is definitely downtown - the further down the better. I like the Wall Street/South Ferry/Battery Park area! I like cities where the topography plays a role in the urban layout. I like Rome, Istanbul, Venice, Stockholm and Budapest for these reasons. Genoa, Dresden, Prague, Seoul and Shanghai have their merits in this regard too. I suppose Amsterdam too but I'm not crazy about Amsterdam. Dublin, Geneva and Busan have this to an extent as well.

I also like smaller towns and cities that have well preserved historic centres or areas like Siena, Bruges, Hoi An, and Ubud.

Special mentions have to go to cities which are just beautiful treasure troves or architectural beauty or bygone finery like Vienna, Madrid, Athens, Siem Reap (Angkor), Pisa and Milan (to an extent) Florence (even though it's overrated) Washington DC, Boston and Kyoto.

I also love a good megalopolis or a city with a strong urban-feeling like Beijing, London, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Berlin, Bangkok and Paris. I suppose New York too but NYC and I aren't on quite the same wavelength. The same goes for Hanoi.

My boyfriend's moving to Istanbul this week:

I think it's important for cities to have parks, green spaces, open squares and water spaces, if possible!

Re: Architecture and Urban Planning.

I'm not much of a fan and despite many years of classes of history of arts, I'm far from being an experct, but I found the new residential area of Malmo, the one built around the turning torso, do be some of the best things I've seen for look, functionality and liveableness.
Some pics i took:

The turning torso is definitely one of my favourite buldings around the world too, art deco is my favourite style but I don't like it with gaudy colors like in Miami, I actually prefer it without any color

Re: Architecture and Urban Planning.

Love Art deco but I'm by no means an architecture aficionado.

In terms of modern architecture I love modern Spanish stuff, and as a country I think they have had a high standard of stylish architecture over the centuries.

Shanghai, taken from various sources on flickr.com. Most of these buildings were originally built in the 30s. What you see below are some of the updated/restored results.

Re: Architecture and Urban Planning.

I'm on SSC almost everyday
And I love so many different styles and types of architecture that it's too hard for me to pick one favourite building (or even top 10). Bauhaus, le Corbusier, Mies are certainly there though. Love Romanesque/Gothic architecture too.

Re: Architecture and Urban Planning.

Great thread Max!

I'm in Environmental Engineering and I'm really thinking about making my way in Architecture or Urban Design to get in the world of Green Architecture. I sometimes think I didn't choose the right path and should have gone in Arch. Grrr.

Anyways, I really enjoyed Stcokholm and Copenhagen Architecture wise. Even better design wise, and their Design and Architecture musueums are amazing. Big fan of Modern and clean lines.

Of course New York is amazing as it is so varied and different. Miami is interesting for its Art Deco areas. I also LOVED Milan, as it is doing a perfect job in mixing the old with the new.
