Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Quite an insightful twitter Q&A all round. Surely we've got to assume she's heading to Dusseldorf for something injury related? She told one person that wrist was "Not great ", said she's "still trying to figure that out" when asked about blocking nerves out during a match, and conveniently missed an early question about still being friends with Bouchard, even though she answered two more questions from that particular person.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Laura's not got arthritis, so that's not too likely.

I also asked if she had any idea when she'd be back which went unanswered.

Laura's understated way of saying that her wrist couldn't be worse:

She's surely had to give up all her attempts at practicing with sponge balls, ping-pong balls etc...

Are you referring to Dr. Giovanni Broccoli who treated Julia Görges last season?

Is he even real?

I can't find any information on him. As KatjaS said Regenokine treatment could be possible.

Kobe Bryant did it on his knee.

Her team has clearly tried every type of rehab possible, I'm sure surgery was last on their minds. But it seems the wrist hadn't reacted to the rehab well enough.

I was referring to this, but as I said, no idea if that is even applicable here, it just immediately came to my mind given that Düsseldorf is a bit of an odd choice, not really a connecting airport and not the most attractive tourist destination in the world.

"Dr. Giovanni Broccoli" is part of the saga of Julia's wrist injury that derailed her career. After taking a few weeks off Julia sent out a press release that her wrist was fine now after being treated by said doctor with the ridiculous name, a "wrist specialist".

Months later she admitted that she played most of 2013 with severe pain in her wrist due to a capsule tear, but kept on playing because her doctor supposedly told her to do so "to keep it mobile". As you said, we couldn't find anything about him, no homepage, no listing in the phone book, nothing - more than odd for a doctor, a specialist no less. I still have no idea what to make of this.

But it is only 40ish minutes away from Cologne. Looking on Expedia, it seems like there are direct flights from LAX to Dusseldorf, whereas flights to Cologne go via JFK and Houston. If Laura's going to Cologne, it wouldn't be a stupid to go via Dusseldorf. But then, the wonderings of Laura are seldom logical.

EDIT: But none, it seems at the time of day she was flying.

Interleukin 1 is increased in tendon injuries caused by high repetition high force activities. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19743505 The treatment supposedly works by blocking IL-1 receptors. If she's tried everything else, she might as well give it a try.

After Kobe had this treatment a bunch of sports figures in LA and even some Hollywood figures followed. So maybe she went to LA to talk to some doctors who had experience with this treatment to get a referral.

Trust me, that would take longer than a week. I've done some admin work in a major hospital in the UK. Even without the difference in time zones and language between LA and Germany, there's simply way too much bureaucracy to get through a referral in that time.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

I want Laura back, I miss her snatching the wigs of all the top players and losing to the lesser players . In all seriousness though, I want her back on tour, she should be with Sloane and Bouchard in the top 20, she really does have potential to be really good. I hope she is working on her fitness and speed in her time off, while her wrist heals.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

'Former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will undergo a second wrist operation in four years on Monday and miss the rest of the season, Argentine media reported.

Del Potro, who pulled out of the Miami tournament this week, will have surgery on his left wrist which he uses for his backhand, having had an operation on his right wrist in May 2010.'

The 25-year-old tried to overcome his problem with physiotherapy but has now decided to resort to American surgeon Richard Berger, the wrist specialist who operated on his right wrist in 2010, the daily La Nacion reported on Saturday.

"I have the experience of how the rehabilitation is, the time it takes," La Nacion quoted Del Potro as having said when he pulled out of Indian Wells two weeks ago and foresaw the possibility of surgery.

"This time, a good thing is I won't lose so much time seeking a diagnosis. In 2010, it took me two to three months to find the right diagnosis and the right doctor. This time, luckily, I know."

Laura could be in for a long lay off

After many years of watching many athletes in different sports get injured. I notice that often the first doctor they see almost always tells them to try conservative treatment and not surgery. Maybe the doctor tells the player what they want to hear (no surgery needed). Or maybe the doctor says you might need to see a specialist or we can try rehab and the athlete hears what they want to hear.

The effect is almost always months wasted trying rest and rehab and then finding the right specialist who knows what surgery is needed.
