Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

Think its probably a good thing to go with consistency right now, she's already swapped coaches enough, time to give Miles a bit more of a go, though I know some of you wouldn't agree with that.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

I agree she needs to stay with Miles at through next season. At some point you have to realize it's not in any coach to make a player care about the details. It's always in the player themselves. It's up to Laura to realize this and do something about it. This next year will be quite telling.

If she doesn't wake up she's in danger of becoming a serial coach killer. How many more can she burn through before she gets a bad reputation?

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

I sometimes wonder how different Laura's year would've been had she have beaten Hsieh in the Guangzhou final last year. It had to have been quite disappointing not to win, considering her form going into the match. I feel like it was such a golden opportunity for her to continue her rise.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

It would only stop her doubters calling her "titleless"

The thing with Guangzhou last year, Laura was physically and mentally fatigued after playing so much tennis, she even said she couldn't move her arms and legs when she was leading 3-0 in the third.

The reason for her regressing in the later part of the year is the change of coaches. Krajan has been implementing things into her game earlier in the year, now Miles has come along with his own tactics. It will leave confusion as a player, she looked confused throughout the Asian swing, as she was trying to do new things but just wasn't comfortable as yet.

Off season should help a lot with fixing these issues.

She needs to start 2014 with a bang. It's vital.

Laura's not done yet, she's not even showing half of what she can do. She just needs a solid direction. She hadn't had that much at all throughout her career, various different coaches through juniors and seniors.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

This something which has been a bit of a mystery to me since I started following Laura's career: Palermo 2012. She'd had a pretty disappointing year but a week after her first round exit at Wimbledon to Schiavone she was in her first WTA semi-final on clay, her weakest surface and beat two clay court specialists, Roberta Vinci and Carla Suarez Navarro en-route. The Olympic silver, hiring Krajan, Clijsters and Li Na at the US Open and a first WTA final at Guangzhou all followed and her ranking shot up too. During her US Open run, the press were speculating on what caused such an improvement in her play and were either pinning it on the confidence boost from the Olympics or her new coach Krajan. However, Palermo was before both of these things and her first set of consistent results since leaving juniors so what caused the turnaround?

Would love to hear some theories even if they are guesses!

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

While I agree she needs to stick with Miles for the time being I am worried that she likes Miles because he isn't pushing her too hard. I've thought for ages that many of Laura's problems are motivational.

Pertinent question! It's a myth that Krajan was responsible for the 'golden spell' Laura enjoyed in the second half of last season. She had only just hired him prior to the US Open: it was far too soon for him to make any impact upon her game and he deserved no credit for her victories over Kim Clijsters and Li Na. In the short term he achieved little. In the long term he wrecked her serve and confidence.

The truth of the matter was that after Wimbledon and a frustrating 1st round defeat to Francesca Schiavone in which Laura played some outstanding tennis but fell prey to her opponent's crafty use of tactical toilet breaks and lengthy MTOs etc, Andy Murray was generous enough to offer the services of his outstanding fitness trainer, Jez Green, for a spell. The results were remarkably effective and immediate. Laura's balance, footwork and speed were transformed, enabling her for the first time to make full use of her natural firepower. Already in Palermo the improvement was clear to see: she was setting herself up to hit huge forehands past Vinci. The Olympics further boosted her confidence, and she came into the US Open riding high.

Why has this season turned pear-shaped when most expected her to push on further and win her first title? That's a harder question to answer but there are several factors: Second season 'blues' and the pressure of defending points are a common phenomenon. The collapse of her coaching relationship with Krajan is another factor - she's often been the picture of unhappiness on court this year. But the most convincing explanation, and one that onlookers have underestimated, is the impact of the wrist injury she suffered at the commencement of the US Open Series. Just when she'd got her season back on track with her fine performance at Wimbledon and, crucially, was beginning to enjoy her tennis again her US Open preparations were sabotaged and her season derailed. The Asian swing was an ordeal for her. She clearly wasn't fit: her wrist still hasn't healed as became clear from the Date-Krumm match, and, to cap it all, she picked up a chest infection in the Beijing smog.

The important thing now is that she takes sufficient time off to fully regain her health. That accomplished, she'll need to go on a very intensive fitness course to develop her speed, explosiveness and court positioning. (Unfortunately, I expect Jez Green is otherwise engaged. I hope Maclagan has the right person in mind.) All being well, Laura will have the opportunity in 2014 to reestablish herself as the outstanding young talent in the womens' game. Let's hope she is as committed as she is gifted.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

So it just occurred to me that after playing in the Olympics last year and the Hopman Cup in 2010 and 2011, this year the streak ended because Andy and Laura didn't play mixed doubles at any tournament. I hope this isn't the end of their partnership, they are such a fun and entertaining pair to watch, oh and successful too as the name of this thread will attest. Who can forget the post match interviews from the 2010 Hopman Cup and all the giggling and banter, I don't think I've ever seen Andy smile so much! Also it really is remarkable how patient he is with Laura and doesn't just smash his racket every time she double faults on break point.

They won't be playing at the Hopman Cup 2014 and its unlikely Andy will play mixed at a slam so I guess it was fun while it lasted

I think they will definitely partner again in Rio 2016. I'm sure they will partner for a slam at one point too, hopefully Wimbledon. Although it might not be next year considering Andy needs to come back from back surgery and try and defend his Wimbledon title etc.

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

The only way I see Murray playing mixed in a slam is if he loses in the first round in singles. I would have thought Laura would be his first priority, but he's also a big Radwanska fan.....

Re: Laura Robson: The Silver Medal Years 2012-

So here's a 3 year old video of Laura (right to play wristband) which I'm sure most people here have seen at some point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gmyQGLzEdg

Is that Eugenie Bouchard dancing with Laura at 2:46? I can definitely see a lot of similarities to the Gangnam vid.
