Yes.. she needs to beat top players.. I hope you are right.. she would have to play about 100 times better than in recent matches though.

Kerber lost in the QF.. just one more match than Ana.. she didn't lose out of fatigue.. played a very good match and Vika just eeked out a win.

Re: Ana's Summer Swing Session (Until US Open)

1st 2012 US Open series match vs former USO semifinalist.
2nd 2012 US Open series match vs last season USO semifinalist.
3rd 2012 US Open series match vs current USO champion.

But I'm not complain at all... Ana should not travel to that city anyway

well, i do think our only hope is that things start to click for ana, no? i think the clicking thing is largely a confidence issue. so, unless you think kerber is a really and truely a bad match-up for her i think we should not be pessimistic.

the next step for ana is beating top 10 players regularly. it has to happen or she won't progress.

Re: Ana's Summer Swing Session (Until US Open)

She got the toughest cookie out of the 4 possible, can Serbia have a normal draw recently?!
I hate Kerber, I hope Ana crushes her. She mustn't lose.

Yes, I think Kerber is a very bad match up for Ana. A lefty who can hit hard and to the corners, who keeps the ball deep and has a good serve.. *and* who runs like crazy and makes you hit 5 winners to win a single point, all while hitting great counter attack shots. So to beat Kerber you not only need to have good attack, but also good defense. Besides all that, Kerber is a resilient fighter who never ever gives up.

Ana had the option of taking on Kerber, Errani, Petra or Caro.. and of the four Kerber is the worst option by far. I think for things to click, Ana can't be losing in every third round she plays.. she needs a few good draws in a row so that she can actually get a lot of matches and a lot of wins. Without matches and wins, hard to see things actually really clicking so that she can also beat more in form/top players.

Ana needs to progress her game in order to have any shot against top players.. the path she is taking, with this average game route, negates her weapons.. she becomes a very ordinary player with nothing special. So yeah.. with this game she is not progressing.. hard to see her beating top players.

I agree that Kerber is a bad match-up, but I disagree that she has a good serve. Her second serve is one of the most pathetic deliveries that have ever existed in the top 10, and I say that bearing in mind that Errani is in the top 10. If Ana were to beat her, it'll have to start with attacking Kerber's second serve.

I've been meaning to address this point for a while...I don't think Nigel aims for her to go that average route. Remember at IW during the QF his on-court advice for her was to 'wear the pants' and to 'make her feel the forehand', which she promptly did. Given that the Montreal court is slower than the average USO court, more similar to IW courts (IIRC), she may have a chance to do that.

i also think that kerber is not a good match-up for ana but i think or like to think that it is not bad in a nid way. meaning, ana should be able to battle her way through. and she can rely on coaching from nigel. i still think his influence is very positive and don't think he is responsible for ana looking like an average 9-12 player.

I have a good feeling about Montreal I've been seeing a match with Aga, even before the draw was out, so she's making at least the semi final

But you have to take into consideration the fact that Kerber is a lefty. She will serve to Ana's BH with angle.. it could be the most pathetic, slow serve ever.. if its angled to the BH Ana either makes an awful return or doesn't return at all.

Nigel is working with Ana on adding spin, adding air to her shots, and having a less risky game. Within that, he wants her to be aggressive, to control points.. but if you are working on putting air to your shots, you are already going to be less aggressive.. and being a tiny bit less aggressive in Ana's case already foresakes control to the other player.. because Ana is not fast enough or tennis smart enough... and you do what you are working on. When she faces top players, they are more aggressive and better at the average game.. happens what it happens, she has been crushed by the first top player she gets in basically every single tournament this year.

They are both taking an average game route, its something they must have agreed on. And this route will always lead Ana to being an ordinary player. It's the opposite route from the aggressive mentality really.. because it pleads for a less risky game. Nigel wants Ana to be aggressive within that average route.. but I think that is extremely hard for her to do. Ana needs to flatten out her FH to make it a real weapon, to be able to be really aggressive with it, to get it heavy and hard again.. yet she is working on making it less risky and adding air to it.. its like having to do something in a match that is the opposite of what you are working on during practice... Its just a 180 spin on mentality for the game.. on how you approach the game play.

The one player who mastered the average game route is Vika, IMHO. She is aggressive within that average route, aggressive without the risky game. But she is a fast player, who has some tennis smarts and who can keep the ball deep 90% of the time. Ana can't play like that at all.. and should never ever even attempt it.. yet sometimes I feel like she is trying to do that... run a lot and hit without taking too many risks. Ana will never be good enough at this.. you have to work to make your strengths show, and the way Ana has been playing just negates her weapons.
