2014 keeps outdoing itself

I haven't watched any matches at Charleston so I dont know how well these four semifinalists have played (probably quite well) but the randomness of results this year is just unreal . The WTA has survived weaker eras, but it's strange with a strong top group (albeit who are all a bit out of form) and the lower end of the top ten very strong and competitive lately too, that Sydney, AO, Paris, Doha (for a P5), Dubai, Indian Wells, and Charleston have all just opened up to otherwise struggling or unestablished players in the latter rounds. Even with Wozniacki/Zvonareva as a pretty weak top two they pretty much cleaned up the big non-majors. I suppose it's enjoyable but what is causing this continued randomness in 2014 ?

There was a string of clay tournaments where Pepa, Caravane, DulGOATru, and Boobges all won Premier titles but this year has been even longer and stranger with top players flopping and just surprising other players coming through. To win a big WTA title these days truly is about somehow winning five-seven matches in a row rather than maintaining a consistent high level of play. Thoughts?

Maybe it's the young players who are on a strong era

Re: 2014 keeps outdoing itself

This has been just the best year for tennis, in my opinion, for the men and women.

However, for people who like consistency, I could understand their annoyance.

I don't hate it.

Charleston especially, has been exciting.

Well it's not that I'm annoyed but it's just a bit odd. Baby Fat played tremendously in Paris but has done almost nothing since. Tsveti has been solid since Sydney but certainly not the same level. Sucketta did well to beat extremely struggling opponents in the semis and final of IW but had to scrap her way there without playing well at all and has bombed in the next two tournaments. Pome seems to be the only one that's had a good result then kept it going. All in all, new faces are fun and interesting, but this year has been more about someone popping up for a single tournament than players who have significantly improved or are young finally establishing themselves by winning big titles.

As for thoughts on what's happening now...well, I like it. It's good. I'm enjoying it. I hope this unpredictability continues into the year's last three Grand Slams too.

At least Datte-Krumm should make the final at Monterrey

Re: 2014 keeps outdoing itself

It has been weird but not that much.

So far :

Slam : Li
Premier Mandatory : Pennetta and Serena
Premier 5 : Halep
Premier : Serena, Pironkova, Pavlyuchenkova, Venus and (Bencic, Cepelova, Bouchard or Petkovic).

The only WTF result that really matters is Pennetta winning Indian Wells.
She didn't really play at a level that screamed "Premier Mandatory champion".

Serena broke up the pattern since all the premiers and majors had different winners this year until Serena won her 2nd Tier I. And Serena lost to Ana. Cornet & Cepelova in her last 4 events.
But whoever wins joins Pavs & Pironkova as most unlikely premier winner so far in 2014.
This one is especially wacky since Petkovic is left with 20, 20 and 17, when we havent seen any winners of premiers younger than Pavs for a few years.
So going to red clay, we'll see if any young players make noise at a "normal" premier

When Venus Williams wins a decent title, you know that it going to be a $hitty year.

Re: 2014 keeps outdoing itself

It's a bit too random for my liking. It's not even really noteworthy anymore when a top 10 or top 20 player gets "upset" by a player ranked much lower. I kinda miss that excitement...

Re: 2014 keeps outdoing itself

I am confused now. It is Petkovic, Cepelova, Bencic and Bouchard in a SF of Charleston. That´s 3 youngsters and a former TOP 10 player. Wasn´t majority of this forum asking when those youngsters will start to make some noise? It is probably happening right now.

Monterrey is a MM tournament, I don´t see any new or strange pattern there. I actually didn´t even the last few weeks.
