Credit: John Mosley Collection, Courtesy Charles L. Blockson Afro American Collection, Temple University.

One of the great athletes of the 1930s, Philadelphia's Ora Washington won nine consecutive singles tennis championships between 1929 and 1937, and twelve straight doubles championships with partner Lula Ballard, also from Philadelphia, from 1925 onwards. Playing in the all-black American Tennis Association, Washington never had the opportunity to test her skills against reigning world woman's champion Helen Wills Moody, who refused to play her. No African-American woman would play in the United States National Lawn Tennis Association until Althea Gibson broke the color barrier in 1950.

Great idea for a thread POV

For those interested there are also threads devoted to each decade that include many photos. Here are the ones pre-1950

Here are the Peters sisters. Roumania peters (on the right) was one of America's top-rated black tennis players during the 1940’s, who in 1944 and 1946 won the national titles of the American Tennis Association (one of the nation’s oldest black sports organizations), and who with her sister Margaret Peters dominated the ATA’s double’s game winning 14 titles .

The sisters were dubbed "Pete" and "Repete". The Blast has a thread devoted to them at:

The rather severe looking Dorothea Lambert Chambers-a 7 time Wimbledon winner. Even the name sounds tough to me.
