Earlu upsets included defending chmap Jankovic, who was blown off the court by Kuznetsova, and Serena Williams, who fell to wily lefty Patty Schnyder.
Safina has had to work to get to this week's final, including a quarterfinal match in which she was down a set and 1-3 in the second before reeling off 11 straight games. That same resilience was needed against the fourth-seeded Williams before Safina finished off a 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4 match that took more than three hours.
"I think (Friday's) match really helped me to push myself to play my best," Safina said, referencing her win over American Venus Williams. "I think I played one of my best matches (Friday). I didn't want to have a reputation that I'm losing finals."
This was Safina's first 2009 title after going 0-3 in previous finals this year. Safina easily avenged her loss to Kuznetsova the week before in Stuttgart. The world #1 rose to 10-10 all-time in finals and is 8-5 against Kuznetsova.
Her victory was worth $350,000.
"I couldn't find the solution today," Kuznetsova said. "I couldn't play my game at all. I made too many unforced errors."
