Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

I was reading about the Hamburg tournament (a very tough place to remember for women's tennis sadly), and in 1987 Graf beat Cueto, yes, but as far as I know Cueto was German too, not Argentine, am I wrong?
BTW, this is a fantastic thread!

I have heard that in the 1986 final, Sabatini held match points against Graf in only their second battle in their storied H2H. How would things turn out had Gabriela converted and earned a win before Steffi could get into her head, so much so that Sabatini could only beat the German in 1988 Boca Raton? Would their rivalry have evolved differently and Sabatini have gotten some more big wins over Stefanie Maria in the years to come?

Thanks for your favourable opinion on the thread and for your observation on Cueto, that I have just corrected.

About Sabatini... I liked Gabriela me too (particularly the first Gabriela, before that too much gym make dull her movements), but it's very difficult answer your question.
That final in the U.S.Clay Court 1986 was their third match, not the second (after the semifinal at Mahwah '85 and the first round of the Virginia Slims Champs. held in March '86).
Before defeat Graf, Gabriela has lost 11 times, often with hard fought matches, and their final H2H have been 29/11 for Graf, a supremacy too much big as we can think that a win of Gabriela in the U.S.Clay Court 1986 could change the development of their rivalry...

The Pacific Southwest Championships, Los Angeles, California

Inaugurated in 1927, and held on hard courts in Los Angeles, usually in late September, the Pacific Southwest Championships was one of the main tournaments in the tennis calendar from its inception until 1971 and the creation of the Virginia Slims tour in the same year. The Pacific Southwest Championships quickly became California's leading tournament, attracting both Hollywood movie stars and, frequently, the top American players in particular.

The tournament continued during World War Two, although the 1943 edition of the Pacific Southwest Championships was an invitational tournament held over three weekends so players would not miss out on war work.

In 1971, both Billie Jean King and Rosie Casals defaulted the final at 6-6 in the first set after a refusal to remove a lineswoman with whom King in particular was displeased. This remains the only occurrence of a double default after both players had taken to the court. The tournament was doomed after this occurrence and eventually discontinued in 1974.
