Update

The tournament which became the West Sussex Championships was first held in Chichester in that county circa 1890. However, there was no non-handicap singles event for women until the late 1890s.

The West Sussex Championships tournament was discontinued in 1912, but was successfully revived in 1924; it was held in Bognor Regis from that year until its demise circa 1978.

Results from the women's singles final at the West Sussex Championships (1899-1978)

Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

Great list Mark. I had one question in reference to 1909

Quote:
West Sussex Championships
1909 Dora Boothby d. Kay Daniell Tuckey 6-3, 8-6
I always understood that this person , nee Agnes Katherine Raymond Daniell, later Tuckey, went by Agnes, with her daughter going by Kay.

Yes Rollo, I had already corrected this name in Mark's list, but I had forgotten to indicate it.
I had corrected too this name in Hampshire Champs. as runner-up in 1911, 12, 13

Thanks Jimbo. Thanks to Mak's help I was able to flesh out some 1919 results and came across a story involving Agnes, who played the Mixed in 1919 with Hope Crisp. Crisp had an artificial leg from the war. Imagine playing Wimbledon in 1919 with 1 good leg!

Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

A short note on Muriel Thomas, who was a long-time friend of Elizabeth Ryan. Muriel was born on 1 May 1905 in Santa Cruz on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. She died on 19 November 1979 in Sutton, London, England. Elizabeth Ryan had died a few months earlier after collapsing at Wimbledon. If I remember correctly, Muriel had been with Elizabeth when she was taken ill at Wimbledon.

Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

Great info on Muriel, whom I associate with the French Riviera due to the numerous events she played there. Based on her results she was best on clay.

I have a note on her that indicates she fled the Riviera in 1940 with Colonel and Mrs Ramsden as the Germans invaded-getting the last boat to England from Biarritz.

Do we know what her middle initial of "A" stood for?

No Northern Tournament of any sort was held in 1975. Cf. the book "Wimbledon of the North" (I forget the author's name).

Re: Official Tournament Winners by Event

Hello Jimbo.

I have found some names and additional info for the South African Chmps. Changes are highlighted in red.

----------------------------------------------

South African Championships

In 1891 the Port Elizabeth LTC assumed the finctions of a governing body of the game and instituted the annaul national championships, controlled from 1903 by the South African Lawn Tennis Union... According to Robertson, " The first official National championships was held at Port Elizabeth as a mark of respect for their special role in first promoting the sport." After 1903 the championships rotated between Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elisabeth, East London, Bloemfontein, Kimberly and Pretoria. From 1931 the venue has been Ellis Park, Johannesburg.

The traditional dates for the event were the Easter holidays until 1973, when the championships was moved to November. The first South African "Open" was in 1969.

The event was at it's height in the 1960s, when many openly talked of the event being a candidate to replace the Australian Open as a slam. A convergence of first rate players and the surface keep it in high regard until the mid-1970s. From 1964 to 1974 the winners also held or would eventaully win Grand Slam titles.

The increasingly unpopular apartheid policy was one major factor in the decline of the event after 1974. The return of the top women in 1984 for a tour level event was a one-off rather than the hoped for revival. After that the event had the status of an IFT event with little prize money. The last event was in 1990.

Notes on Names
Mabel Grant listed as H Grant is many records.

(Per Newmark) Mrs H.(A.) Kirby is more than likely the former Amy Wilson, who had some success at British tournaments under both her maiden and married names. She appears to have married an Arthur Kirby whose first name might have been Harold. "Lawn Tennis and Badminton" definitely mentions Mrs Kirby as being the former Amy Wilson.

The wiki list uses Mrs McLagan-note that the Wolrd Tennis list from 1986 uses Mclagon (apparently in error) and the South African Story uses Mrs M'Lagan.

Most Singles Titles

6 Amy Kirby (1904-1907, 1910, 1912) *usually listed as Mrs HA Kirby
5 Bobbie Heine Miller (1928,1931-2,1936-37)
4 Mabel Grant (1891-1894)
4 Billie Tapscott Robbins (1930, 1933-34,1938)

Longest Span between titles: 12 years. Annette Van Zyl won in 1963 and again in 1975 as Mrs DuPlooy.
