Niagara-on-the-Lake International, Canada
The Niagara-on-the-Lake International tournament was first held in 1885 and, in several years, managed to attract a number of the top American players. Indeed, it is clear from the records that the top American players tended to prefer this tournament, which was usually held in mid- to late August, over the open Canadian Championships.
In the early years the women's singles final at this tournament was played over the best of five sets several times.
The Niagara-on-the-Lake International tournament was held on grass courts. It continued on for a number of years after World War One.

Nice, France (Clay)
Venue: Nice LTC at Place Mozart, moved to the Imperial Park in 1921 or 1922
Tennis came to the Riviera with the English, who descended en masse on the Cote d'Azur after Queen Victoria made it her holiday spot in the late 1800s. During the Riviera season (December-March) several events would be held in Nice, making things confusing at times. The main tournament was the South of France Championships, then there was the Nice Championships (Tournoi International de la ville de Nice), and we have also the Nice Lawn Tennis Club Champs.
After the WWII is difficult establish if were played the South of France Champs., or the Nice Championships. We have a roll of honour of "Tournoi International de la ville de Nice" , taken from an official programme of 1980s, that incorporates under this denomination tournaments from 1912 to 1938 that are clearly South of France Champs., and all tournaments after the WWII.
I will insert these last tournaments on South of France Champs., as it was the most important tournament.
Events below are listed by title:
South of France Championships
The “Times”, 23 March 1909 (quoted by Newmark in his thread
http://www.tennisforum.com/showthrea...t=south+france ) writes that 1909 was the 15th edition of the tournament, and Spalding's Annual writes that 1912 was the 18th edition. Therefore we must think that the first edition was held in 1895, at least the men. (But the four tournaments 1895 '96 '97 '98 written below, in Nice Lawn Tennis Club Champs., maybe are the lacking first editions of the South of France Champs.)

North of England Championships, Scarborough
Generally held around mid-August, the North of England Championships was for many decades one of the most popular summer tournaments in the British lawn tennis calendar. The venue for the tournament was almost invariably Scarborough, a town located in the county of North Yorkshire, by the North Sea Coast. (Due to its location, Scarborough has always been popular with holidaymakers.) The only other place to host the North of England Championships was Harrogate, a spa town also situated in North Yorkshire; the tournament was held there once, in 1904.
For a number of years in the late 1880s/early 1890s the women's singles event featured a Challenge Round, meaning that the holder, if taking part, did not have to play through what was known as the All-Comers' event. In 1888, the Challenge Round match between Margaret Bracewell, the holder, and Bertha Steedman, was replayed from the start after rain had prevented it from being completed on finals day with the score at one set-all.
In the years 1894, 1896-98 and 1900, the tournament experienced a dip in fortunes (it was not held in 1895 and 1899) and probably had just the status of the Yorkshire Open (YO). Thereafter, the North of England Championships tournament was revived and continued on well into the 1960s. Open tennis no doubt continued to its eventual demise.

Northern Championships, England
Venue: Usually held at Manchester or Liverpool. Nicknamed "the Wimbledon of the North". Not to be confused with the North of England Chmps.
The “Northern Tournament”, officially known as the Northern Lawn Tennis Association Tournament, was first held in 1880; in that year and in the following year it was held in Manchester. There was no women’s singles event at the tournament in its first two years. In 1882, a women’s singles event was inaugurated and the tournament was held in Liverpool for the first time. In subsequent years it would be held alternately in Manchester and Liverpool. The actual venues were the Liverpool Cricket Ground in Aigburth, a suburb of Liverpool; and the Old Trafford Ground in Manchester.
A Challenge Round was in force from 1885 to 1905. An asterisk (*) after the score indicates that the defending champion did not take part in that particular year. In such cases the result of the All-Comers' Final is given.
From 1929 until 1939, a tournament was held in both Liverpool and Manchester. After World War Two, a single “Northern Tournament” was held in Manchester for several years.
The event saw a revival as a Wimbledon warmup event after World War II-8 Northern Champions also winning Wimbledon. As the French Open and tour events crowded the calendar in the mid 1970s the event declined. Men's events lasted until 2009.

*In 1910 due to rain at Liverpool, the final was played at Edgbaston later in the season.
*In 1964 the event was cancelled at the semifianl stage due to rain. Bueno, Moffitt, Caldwell, and Richey were in the semis. The 4 semifinalists refuse to play on a wet court after Truman slips and injures herself in the quarters. The event was then cancelled.
