Azarenka even as she currently is would never beat prime Serena and peak Henin in easy straight sets in slam finals as Maria did. Her level is good enough to dominate for the time being the abysmal WTA, and I am so glad someone has emerged to do that, but wouldnt be so formidable even half a decade ago. However if we are talking a head to head matchup between the two, Azarenka is a nightmare matchup for Maria, so it is harder to say. I think in a head to head Azarenka wins on slower surfaces and Sharapova on faster ones.

In 2007, an 18 year old Azarenka straight stetted Sharapova just weeks before Maria went on to reach the YEC finals, and only a couple of months before Maria's AO 2008 run. And all of this in Sharapova's home tournament too.
Agreed with both of you. Very good point with the Moscow meeting. Main difference is, it would be at least a lot closer than the last meetings because of Martha's more potent serve.

Re: Who will win, Peak Sharapova vs. Peak Azarenka?

Maria 2008 AO form was just superb, winner after winner after winner. juju and jeja who were probably the best 2 movers at the time couldn't stay in a rally at all. i wasn't even mad at jelena after that loss, maria was just outstanding... azarenka has great potential but maria's A game is just on another level compered to vika's

Peak Masha beat Henin 6-4 6-0.

Peak Masha would beat Vika in 2 easy sets

I said AT LEAST a lot closer. Peak Maria playing against Vika would also clarify if the latter is a bad match-up after all or not.

Too bad we will most probably never see Peak Maria again, so there is really no point in arguing about this.

Re: Who will win, Peak Sharapova vs. Peak Azarenka?

Peak Sharapova had an incredibly good serve to backup her vicious ROS and groundstrokes. Azarenka has never faced a peak Sharapova and if she had she would have lost more often than won in my opinion. We will soon see someone totally eat Azarenka's serve for breakfast (not sure who but it is simply a matter of time) and when we do it will highlight the biggest weakness in her game.

The bright side in all of this is that Sharapova is honestly trying to figure Azarenka out... I finally saw that at Indian Wells. Normally for the past few seasons Sharapova has had a high DF number which gave too many free points to Victoria (along with being too inconsistent). At Indian Wells, however, she had very few DFs but had poor serving box placement as well as being too predictable. So we have seen her go from one extreme to the other... First too aggressive and recently too passive.

Now she just needs to find the balance between the two again. Although Sharapova lost IW I think it was a tactical step in the right direction for her.

This it was just piss poor execution, also Vika reminds me of a less aggressive Golovin and despite pushing Masha to the limit at times - Masha always won.

Peak Maria would really slaughter anyone in her generation not named peak Henin, peak Serena and peak Venus. She would absolutely kill peak Vika.

wut. She has fabulous techniques on her groundstrokes. Quite clearly has one of the greatest bh in her generation, and has the smoothest fh in the current top 10 (yes even ahead of Kvitova).

Re: Who will win, Peak Sharapova vs. Peak Azarenka?

peak sharapova can't add much to the game she showed during her matches against Vika, she just doesn't have the variety of shots to hurt an in form Azarenka mostly on medium speed courts like those.

peak Sharapova groundstrokes have so much more depth and angle than what she has displayed over the years, and had one of the best backhand crosscourts on the tour (which was MIA in the Indian Wells final). She had a much bigger and much more consistent serve to boot (which was MIA in basically all her matches vs. Vika including those she won). She might not have the variety majority the other players on the tour had, but who needs it when you're hitting winners effortlessly or hitting unplayable shots, and even the best movers/counterpunchers couldn't deal with it?

Maria was also fearless, calm, composed and nothing could break her concentration (other than Serena), something we cannot say about the current Sharapova; mentality takes you a long way.
