Maria will be No. 2 if she beats Bartoli today.

Re: Maria's ranking breakdown in detail (and other random stats)

Pova has played so much more tennis this year than most, it seems so wrong that she will carry three Zero tournaments in her ranking through the 2013 USO Series! And that's assuming she doesn't get anymore zeros in the Fall!

Re: Maria's ranking breakdown in detail (and other random stats)

It really does look like a big 3 - we've seen close matches between Maria and Vika and Vika and Serena the last few days. All we need to see is a Maria win,or a close match against Serena for it to be a great 3 way rivalry

Is there any chance that pova can still get the Year End #1?

Mathematically, yes. Masha basically has almost nothing to defend while Vika has YEC final, Tokyo SF and Luxembourg win. But that's a BIG ask. She surely has to outperfom both Vika and Serena by quite some margin to have a chance, which means she needs to take all three tournaments that she's gonna enter very seriously and do very well in all of them.

Serena won't even care for the next mont tbh, so Maria just needs to have a very strong run in Asia and Istanbul to get it

Re: Maria's ranking breakdown in detail (and other random stats)

According to the schedule, Pova will play:

2012 Tournie 2011

900 Tokyo ...225 Ankle injury, retired.
1000 Beijing ...0 Could not play, Ankle Injury
1500 YEC .....140 Should not have played, Ankle Injury.
==== -------- ===
3400 -------- 365

For Pova the End of Year Run has 3400 points available in the three tournaments she is sccheduled to play. Last year she earned only 365 points due to the ankle injury in Tokyo.

Vika is 496 points ahead of Pova in the Race, so Pova must earn 497 points more than Vika during the End Of Season Run. That won't be easy to do, but it may be possible.

Pova also has to look out for Serenka making an end run around her! Pova is only 290 points ahead of Serenka. Typically Serenka doesn't play much in the Fall, but if she was motivated enough to make a push at RG to try to block Pova from completing her Career Slam, maybe she will play Tokyo, Beijing and the YEC to try to block her from YE#1.

The Season End tournies look to be important this year! Hopefully exciting, too.

I think she will lose 120 points from Paris at the end of the season because of her 0 pointers.

Re: Maria's ranking breakdown in detail (and other random stats)

So - I've these questions

a) I'm looking at the Istanbul qualifier list and it seems like they have 2 different rankings systems - WTA ranking (Masha 8435 p) and the Race to Istanbul ranking (Masha 8415 p) - Why is there a diff between them

b) What is the significance of finishing as the #1 in Istanbul? - Is it just an honorable thing?

Thanks

a) Maria's 8435 ranking ponits includes 140 points from 2011 YEC but doesn't include the 120 points from 2012 Paris Open. The 8415 Race points includes the 120 from 2012 Paris but not the 140 from 2011 YEC.
b) Maria is only 496 points behind Vika in Race and can take over year end No. 1 ranking if she wins Istanbul.
