Thanks Jimbo. I checked ancestry.com and found an exact death date. She died 25 August 1962
On a separate matter I already had an entry for Maria Covi as marrying Forlanini.

Re: The Official Married Names Thread
I found more on Elfi Kreigs-Au Carroll-largely thanks to Jimbo's research.
KRIEGS-AU, “ELFI” (Elfriede Kriegs-Au)Austria/United States
Born 05 November 1915 in Vienna, Austria
Died 01 March 2004
Married Ronald Carroll (born circa 1913) by 1940 census, possibly as early as 1935
Active in local New York tennis up to 1969.
Came to the US circa 1939. 1940 census (which lists her as Elfe) shows she had lived in Havana, Cuba in 1935, had 4 years of college, and was living Queen’s, New York city, New York. Her spouse Ronald was born in Poland, and like Elfi in 1940 was not yet a citizen. Ronald was also in Havana in 1935, so they were probably wed by that date.
First mention playing tennis in the US in the NYT in June of 1940.
She was ranked No. 14 in the United States by the U.S. Tennis Association in 1952. She was a member of the U.S. Paddle Tennis Hall of Fame. She was an avid bridge player and a sailor. Survivors include two sons, Michael A. "Mike" Carroll, Greenlawn, N.Y., and Thomas G. "Tom" Carroll, Tinton Falls, N.J.; a sister, Maidie Kriegs-Au, and a brother, Dieter Kriegs-Au, both of Vienna;
Her obituary is in the St Petersburg Times. Last residence: 33703 Saint Petersburg, Pinellas, Florida.
Won 1949-1952 Women’s Eastern Clay Chmps (of New York?) Played Forest Hills in 1951. She used a western grip forehand to produce good topspin.
• In platform tennis HOF (1970). Women's National Champion 1950, 1955 and 1958; finalist 1951, 1952,1953, 1957 and 1960.
• National Mixed Doubles Champion (with her husband) for four straight years - 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952; finalist 1953 and 1958.

Posted by Jimbo Rollo, in 1950 thread above you have written that Elfi von Kriegs-Au Carroll "from 1949 to 1952 won the Eastern US Clay title for four years running."
As we have in our yearly threads only her victory in 1950, do you have her other victories?
But in 1952 we have this result:
Jul 26, Eastern States Clay Courts , Philadelphia ,PA,US (CL)
FI Joan Merciadis d. Connie Bowan 6-0 6-1
Other question: looking on men's results I have seen that "Eastern Clay Court Championships" (or "Eastern US Clay Champs.") and "Eastern States Clay Courts Champs." seem two different tournaments, with different winners.
Is it true? Their denominations are very much alike. Which is the difference between them?
|
You are correct about there being two differenet events with similar titles.
1= Eastern States Clay Courts. This is a sectional event covering the Eastern States (New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, etc)
2= Eastern Clay Court Chmps. My guess is this is the Eastern clay court chmps of New York. This is the event Elfi won 4 years running.

Re: The Official Married Names Thread
Thanks Rollo for above info about Elfi Kriegs-Au Carroll and the two similar "Eastern" tournaments.
About the incomplete roll of the Eastern Clay Court Champs that we have in "Official Tournament Winners by Event thread" , I am afraid it's mix results of the two "Eastern" tournaments.
Do you have something about the true honour roll of that tournament?

Rollo, I have a doubt: Maidie Kriegs-Au, sister of Elfi, was a tennis player?
As if Elfi lived in Havana, Cuba in 1935, and then she had 4 years of college (where? always in Cuba?) before go to the US circa 1939, the results that show a Kriegs-Au in European tournaments in 1938 and 1939 have not got by Elfi, as I thought.
What do you think about it?

I see the logic in what you are saying.
Perhaps the census taker got it wrong, and only the husand had 4 years of college and lived in Havana from 1935?
