Re: The Official Married Names Thread

A note on the English tennis-playing Aitchison sisters from around the turn of the twentieth century. There were four of them, the best player being the eldest, Frances Helen Aitchison (b. 1881), known as Helen, later Mrs Leisk.

Helen was followed by Alice, Kathleen and Sibyl. Contemporary sources mention a "Miss K.B. Aitchison". This is Helen's sister, Kathleen Bulkeley Aitchison (b. circa 1886). The four sisters were natives of Sunderland in the county of Durham, in north-east England. Their mother, Mary, came from Sunderland, too. Their father, James, a shipbuilder by profession, was a native of Scotland.

The wikipedia entry on Helen Aitchison is quite accurate and can be viewed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Aitchison

Madeline Alice Fisher
United Kingdom
Born 2 September 1867
Died 3 June 1934
Married Edward Armstrong O'Neill, 9 October 1890

This is the "Mrs O'Neill" of yore.

A problem: there was a Madeline O'Neill that played and wins many times in French and United Kingdom from 1909 to 1923.
I think that she wasn't Madeline Alice Fisher, because in 1923 she would have been 56 years old.
What do you think about?

Anyway, there could have been two Mrs O'Neills, but Alan Little, honorary libarian of the library at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, has just that one in his "Wimbledon Compendium", and he is a very reliable source.

Bertha Crouch
USA
Born 16 August 1874
Died 8 July 1957
Married Martin M. Chase, 1 December 1899

Bertha won the singles title at the Pacific Coast Championships in 1891, but did not defend her title in 1892.

A couple of sources for some of the above information:

http://www.cagenweb.com/glenn/Eibe-Zum/CWT-Fam.htm (a family tree; Bertha's father was definitely named Elisha)

Sadie ended up in a bit of scandal in the 40s/50s. Besides the adultery case, she had taken over tennis coaching in the 1940s from a couple of men who had gone to war. Apparently she had agreement from the LTAA that once they returned and she could relinquish professional coaching duties, her amateur status would be reinstated.

This happened, but she (and at least one other woman) were banned from the Victorian Championships which had a special rule preventing re-instated amateurs from competing. She could compete in other championships, but not the Vic.

2) married Clive Malcolm ROGERS by November 1951

It's quite a read to type in "tennis" and "divorce" in the Trove paper archive. One famous Davis Cupper sued for abandonment. Alf Chave was caught by his wife with another woman in a car.

One right scandal is the case of the first Mrs F Gordon Lowe. This is the same F Gordon Lowe who put out the Lowe's Annuals in the 1930s. The same Lowe who won the Ausie in 1915.
His full name was Sir Francis Gordon Lowe, 2nd Baronet (born 21 June 1884- died 17 May 1972).

Mrs Lowe #1 (nee Margaret Manley Alice Sims) was married with a daughter when she took up with Gordon-who was her her mixed doubles partner. She lost custody of the child, divorced, and wed Gordon. Her first spouse was Major Henry Sanderson "Harry" Laverton (b 1873-d 1958) of the King's Hussars. He was a noted cricket player.

*Note some sources list her as Margaret Alice Manley-Sims.

In 1921 she was involved another scandal when she was caught stealing money from others players on the Riviera
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi...G19210407.2.38

This was forgotten about as Gordon paid back all the money she stole. Her excuse on being caught was her desire to cover up her massive gambling debts.

Gordon apparently dropped her for wife #2 (nee Dorothy Honor Woolych), whom he maaried in 1926.
--

This article has a picture of her-she is credited with saving an Indian child from drowning while in India.

( A is for Adelaide )
So, I think that her marriage with Jack Rameson is happened in 1918 probably.

Newspaper reports from 1918 are also listing her as Yeager. She was still Yeager (or Yager) as of early July in 1918.

From 1930 Census records and Heritage Quest I have gathered the following:

She was born Born c 1892 or 1893 in Missouri-parents born in New York.

Her spouse was Jack Alfred Rameson (1874-1944)

Sons Jack (b 3 Dec 1919) and Fred circa 1921. There were other young Rameson's in the household much older, presumably Adelaide's stepchildren.

There is a Jack A Rameson III who is a probate lawyer. Odds are he is Adelaide's grandchild. Perhaps he could give us full details if someone wants to contact him.

She was "of age" to be married in 1933. Nonetheless this looks like an error on the part of the paper. The New York Times states she was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Ira D Wheeler of Santa Monica. Plus
she's so well known any former husband would be known.

The best explanation IMO is Louis was her brother/escort and the paper incorrectly put a "Mrs" where it should have been "Miss."

Keep up the good work Jimbo!

Annie Marie Blanche Soisbault
France
Born 1934
Married Marquis Philippe de Montaigu

She's probably the only tennis player to switch from a promising tennis career to a successful one as a rally driver. The Annie Soisbault Cup was named after her by her father, Robert, one-time president of the French Tennis Federation. (Montaigu, not Montaign, is the correct spelling of that particular name.)

Lilian Mary Olivia Cole
Ireland/United Kingdom
Born 1864
Died 16 June 1919
Married Charles Edward Pine-Coffin, 1885

Lilian Cole was born in Leixlip, County Kildare, Ireland, but married an Englishman who was a native of Exmouth, Devon. That would explain why Lilian Cole had such a close association with the early Exmouth tournament.
