Not really. It was a putaway after her opponent did nothing with a rather mediocre Maria volley.
. I thought it was like the volley she hit against Radwanska in Toronto 2009 .

Anyway every volley should be valued alike when it comes to Maria .

I thought it was a good match tbh. What are people here expecting? Especially given the 'junk' balls that Spanish player kept throwing at her

Not that you guys are saying, it was a pretty good match. More winners than errors. And serve was good too especially in the second set stats are really fine.

Re: 2012 FED CUP Thread --- 1R vs Spain

I wanted CSN to win... but good for Masha that Sveta won I guess. Less pressure on her. Now take out CSN (I'm sorry!!!!!!)

She's defending well too. I think I like Maria on slow courts. She's been excelling, in terms of results, on them as the last 52 weeks. Indian Wells SF, Miami RU, Rome CH, RG SF, AO RU, and doing well here imo.

I still think she's better on quicker hardcourts... her best hardcourt result last year was at Cincinnati, which is super-quick. I think the speed of the Paris courts should be right up her street.

Anyway, didn't see today's match, but it sounds like she gave a decent performance Hopefully a straight-sets win tomorrow.

Re: 2012 FED CUP Thread --- 1R vs Spain

Guys. Looking at Petra there, I'm really thinking that Masha needs to step it up against Vika and get a good win over her at Miami/IW or during the clay court season. 'cus Petra isn't gonna be a threat until clay season or possibly even Wimbledon. Rena isn't playing anythin until the clay season and that's when Masha would have her best chance against her.

Anyways point is, Masha needs to concentrate on Vika when the rest of the field isn't as strong and revert this blossoming ownership.

Anyone think she should play Doha or Dubai?

I wouldn't rule out Petra (she's flaky as hell, and can play horrendous matches, but she can return to GOAT form at any time), but I agree that getting a quality win over Azarenka needs to be the TOP priority for Maria over the next few months. Like I think I wrote in this forum the other day, Maria needs to start beating the elite girls in WTA tournaments by actually playing great tennis against them, rather than just outfighting them, so that she has confidence in her actual game and that it's good enough to beat them when she runs into them in the semis or finals at Slams (rather than just the confidence that she's mentally tougher than them and will be able to outfight them if it gets to a tight 3-setter).

I actually think it's good that she's skipping the Middle East tournaments... what does she really have to gain from playing them? They're not warm-ups for anything major, and most of the top players aren't playing them so a win for Maria at either wouldn't have much value (Kim and Serena aren't playing them, and even Azarenka hinted the other day that she might skip them). And we all know Maria's not the type to play things just for the sake of ranking points or prizemoney/appearance fees. I think playing them would just waste vital physical and mental energy which she could save for more important tournaments, and she'd be having to acclimatise to the freezing conditions in Europe, then rushing to the swelteringly hot and humid conditions in the Mid East, then the cooler conditions in the States, all within a few weeks She's much better off just focussing on being ready for Indian Wells/Miami after Paris imo.

Well now that Azarenka has hinted she's not playing them, there's no point. I only thought she should play one to get another go at her. But yeah, hopefully she doesn't get sick 'cus the work Masha and Hoggy seem to get done in those three week blocks is genuinely amazing. I pretty much agree with anything you said, and I know you can never rule out Petra but I'm sure as Hoggy said the first set over Kvitova at AO will give Masha the confidence to know she can beat her on a consistent basis, at least on hardcourts. But yes, I can't exaggerate how badly I feel she needs a solid win over Azarenka. I don't Expect Vika to have a slump, but Fed Cup will show a lot.

*EDIT* Apparently Vika just pulled out of Fed Cup, some lower back problem

I didn't watch the match, but she won 6-2 6-1 so it can't have been that bad?

Maybe not her cleanest match but it's getting the win that counts

plus I don't think we should ever judge her form from these matches. I mean look at the exho with Vesnina. and that WTT match.

I have a question, if Maria wins the match tomorrow does that mean Russia wins? because it would be awesome if Masha plays the winning match.

Does, of course... It will be 3-0 and that means Team Russia wins the tie
