Kristen Flipkens wins marathon qualifying match

Kristen Flipkens and Ksenia Pervak made Moorilla Hobart International history today, recording the longest ever qualifying match for the tournament. In a match lasting two hours 49 minutes and 46 seconds, Flipkens came back from a set down to win through to the final round of qualifying, 6-7(4) 6-4 7-5.

Defending Moorilla Hobart International champion, Petra Kvitova is one match closure to a main draw birth, winning her match against Shuai Zhang 6-4 6-3.

Kvitova is joined in the final round by two other former champions, Anna Chakvetadze (2007) and Michaella Krajicek (2006).

Chakvetadze recorded a comfortable win over Elena Chalova 6-2 6-2, while Krajicek, who is celebrating her 21st birthday today, was forced to fight for a place in the final eight, pushed to three sets by Tatjana Malek.

Dropping the first set, Krajicek fought back to win the second set in a tiebreaker. Up 5-0 in the deciding set and with the crowd behind her, she survived a late comeback from Malek to win 3-6 7-6(5) 6-3.

Main draw action gets underway tomorrow (Sunday) at the Domain Tennis Centre in Hobart.

Tickets can be purchased for the Moorilla Hobart International through Ticketek, or at the Domain Tennis Centre, with tickets starting at just $9.90.

Qualifier through to quarterfinals

Qualifier Kirsten Flipkens has defeated No.6 seed Aleksandra Wozniak at the Moorilla Hobart International today.

Flipkens, the world No.80, has won five matches on her path to the quarterfinals, including a straight sets win over the tournament’s defending champion Petra Kvitova in the final round of qualifying.

The Belgian is looking to secure her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournament title at the Moorilla Hobart International and will meet Sara Errani in the next round.

“I was hoping to have like two or three matches going into the Australian Open but I’m already having five right now so yeah I’m really satisfied to be in the quarterfinals,” Flipkens said.

“I’m seeing it match by match, today I was the underdog and she was sixth seeded so it’s really good for my confidence.

“Everyday is changing, it’s windy, it’s cloudy, some rain, sunshine, everything … all the conditions are different but I’m handling it pretty good,” Flipkens continued.

Australian Alicia Molik put up a good fight against fifth seed Carla Suarez Navarro but wasn’t able to secure the match.

Suarez Navarro, the world No.33, controlled the important points in the final set winning 7-6(3) 3-6 6-3.

The Spaniard will meet the winner of tonight’s match between Jelena Dokic and second seed Shahar Peer in the quarterfinals.

Molik was disappointed with the loss but happy with her progress leading into the Australian Open.

“It’s probably the best preparation I could ask for. I did the right thing for two hours, it was only probably five or six minutes at the end of the match that I didn’t quite do the right thing, so that’s a pretty good sign,” Molik said.

“I feel like I should have won, that’s the mentality I went into the match with … but
I’m not too disappointed because I can’t be.”

In the final match of the day session, Sara Errani defeated Kateryna Bondarenko in straight sets, 7-6(8) 6-4.

More reason than one for Flipkens to celebrate

After travelling to Dubai for the qualifiers of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championship last week without anything, barring her tennis racquets and shoes, Flipkens has done well for herself and the spirit of the game in advancing for a second round meeting against Russian Vera Zvonareva, who battled her way past fellow countrywoman Elena Vesnina on Monday.

Dubai: Tuesday's second round match for Kirsten Flipkens will be special in more ways than one for the Belgian.

The drama for Flipkens commenced on Wednesday as she prepared to leave from Brussels. "Our flight to Zurich got cancelled in the morning without any notice and then ten hours later they offered us another flight to Munich. It was quite boring for us to stay at the airport doing nothing. And then, half an hour before departure the Munich flight too got cancelled, so they put us on a flight to London which was okay considering what we had already been through. But we had to stay on the tarmac for an hour because it was snowing," she recounted.

That delay meant she reached late for her onward flight to Dubai, forcing her to stay close to 18 hours at the Heathrow airport before getting another connection to Dubai. "So I went to sleep on the floor next to the desk just to make sure I don't miss it again when they opened the counter that was supposed to open at 4 am. There was too little time to go out and book into a hotel," she added.

The Belgian landed at the Dubai International Airport on Thursday night trying to catch up on precious sleep only at 3.30 am with her first qualifying match slotted the same morning (Friday).

"The only thing that I wanted to do was to sleep, but I had the pressure that I needed to play a match the same morning. I was not used to the weather, to the balls and to the courts and this was a big challenge for me," she smiled.

But that was just one of the challenges as she realised that the airline had lost her baggage too! "I had no choice but borrow some clothes from my friends here," she narrated.

That looked more like a good omen for the Belgian as she went on to win both her qualifying matches to make the main draw of the competition. And Sunday, she became one of four qualifiers entering the main draw here. "It could not have been better than this. You can't imagine how tough it is. I have done nothing but practiced and tried tracing my luggage with the airline. And if my bags don't arrive then I will have to go and buy some stuff for myself. We'll see, don't know what is going to happen, but I do think I have all the right reasons to stay back for a few more days in Dubai," Flipkens smiled.

After enquiries, it has been reported that British Airways delivered the player's baggage at the Grand Hyatt at 2 am (Monday) with a compensation of 35 pounds. "This has been one of the most bizarre incidents that have occurred to me in my career. It was like a step in the dark coming here for the qualifiers after going through all this. Mentally it is hard and very tough on court too but it's been worth it. And everything from now on is a bonus," Flipkens added
