I stayed not far from there a few weeks ago. If you are coming into Heathrow I recommend using either the Heathrow Connect or if you can afford it, the Heathrow Express to get to Central London. Both come into Paddington station which will then only be a short Taxi ride to your hotel.

Avoid using the regular Underground if you have to be somewhere at a particular time, say for a west end show or something. The service in my experience is unreliable, especially at weekends. If you do use the underground, allow plenty of extra time for your journey. Always have an underground map with you. Buy an Oyster Card or Travelcard if you plan on using the underground.

London has many wonderful sights, try to plan ahead what you want to see, as getting between each of them is challenging.

Stuff I'd recommend

St Pauls Cathedral (So beautiful, more than I ever imagined!)
Walk along the Thames (Amazing views)
A west end theatre show ( Loved Mamma Mia to my surprise!)
London Eye and Thames boat trip (You can buy a combined ticket)
Buckingham Palace/St James Park/Green Park (All close to each other)
National Gallery/Trafalgar Square (Next to each other)
Natural History Museum/Victoria and Albert Museum/Science Museum. (All close to each other and not far from you.)

I'm afraid you're not going to find anything 'cheap' in Kensington (where Notting Hill is), it's one of the more expensive areas of London. You're going to have to go further north if you're on a tight budget. You could look at staying in a hostel though? Having said that if you google something like 'cheap hotel kensington' I'm sure It'll bring something up.

The tube is far more reliable than buses & taxis (much cheaper than the latter too!). At the moment they're doing work on the weekend ahead of the Olympics which can be annoying, but I'm pretty sure they will have finished the new District & Circle line by march so it shouldn't be an issue.

An Oyster card isn't worth getting if you're only coming for 5 days or so, I think you can get a weeklong railcard though, which works on buses. That would a good buy.

if you want to know anything else I can try to help.

But the one thing I would say is if you're going to use them in Central London to go just a few stops (e.g Victoria - Westminster). You're usually quicker walking direct overground because of the distance to get to the actual platform from the tube entrance.

It's all about personal experience, I don't doubt what you said reflects your experiences.

Just as mine reflect my own experiences, that while I was in London the majority of my Tube journey's were disrupted to a greater or lesser extent, and that when I used taxi's for transfers to stations and hotels I found them to be more reliable in getting me to where I want to go on time.

To have multiple lines closed just because it happens to be a weekend isn't great if your visit includes a weekend stay!

About the Oyster card...don't they load a Travelcard onto the Oyster card or something? It's a needlessly complex system.

London at it's best is an amazing city, but it's main problem is that whatever way you get from A to B, walking, taxi, Underground...offers it's own problems.

Re: Going to London.Need some help.

You can usually get pretty good hotel deals online if you leave it until a few days before you want to stay.

Londonnights.com got us a really good deal for Valentine's weekend in a really nice hotel in Earl's Court about three years back for a really good price.

There's a fairly cheap, sizeable hotel down by Clapham South tube station opposite the common. Not sure what it's called or if it's still there.

Thanks so much for the reply guys
Hostel could be an option if I travel with friends but with my family dont think so. My mother is searching for some apartaments to rent near Notting Hill but if you wrote that is not cheap..
The main problem is that our money (peso argentino) is so
1 Euro is $ 6 peso argentino

It has its good days and its bad days. The problem is, on a bad day, one issue can create a domino affect that then carries over to other lines/routes etc.

But on a normal day, with no signal failures, closures due to maintenance work, people throwing themselves under a train, snow on tracks, passenger alarms going off etc, it really is a great tube network where you rarely have to wait more than 2-3 mins for a train.

I moan about the tube, but when I go back to visit Sydney and have to adjust to 10-15 min wait for suburban line trains, the tube is an amazing service next to Sydney's archaic system.

Re: Going to London.Need some help.

Why do you need to stay in Hyde Park or Notting Hill ?

Both are extremely expensive areas to stay.

Try Hammersmith, Fulham, Putney or Paddington. All probably still a lot more than you'd like but easily accessible to Hyde Park or Notting Hill and probably for less.

Re: Going to London.Need some help.

^I actually stayed in a cheap Travelodge in Fulham for Wimbledon in 2009 (£54 per night for a single). It wasn't amazing quality (I couldn't leave my suitcase there when I arrived which really pissed me off ) but that's still really reasonable considering you're not too far from central London at all - and only about 8-10 minutes, if that, from Hyde Park/Kensington/Notting Hill etc on the underground on the district line.

^ Agreed - if the thread starter is willing to go a bit further away from the centre then there's loads of places in every direction.
