Players like Petko and Lucie will be in Brisbane too, both very capable of playing good tennis. I mean Sam can beat any of these players if shes playing well, if she can get into good form early it'll be a perfect tournament to test herself.

Serena... she's had more time to rest that foot, and she'll be out for blood after USO. So if Sam and Serena meet in Brisbane, it will be interesting. In saying that we all know who the crowd will be cheering for this time.
I think it's to Sam's advantage that Serena's out for blood. Sam is one of the few players who are not overawed by Serena, but at the same time I think she has the luxury of knowing that it's no disgrace to lose to her, so she probably feels less pressure playing Serena than she does playing most other players. By contrast, losing again would really hurt Serena, so I think she will be more nervous when they play again than Sam is.

As for Kim and Masha, I think they both have their best form well and truly behind them. Which is not to say that Sam's a shoe-in against them, but I don't think she has any particular reason to fear them these days. And if she gets into a positive frame of mind I don't think she needs to be too concerned about any of the other either. I'm most worried about some relatively obscure player who Sam doesn't know coming out and playing a blinder. Sam can get very indecisive against players she's not familiar with.

The fact that people don't expect much from her on grass might also help.
Totally agree with this. I mean she's won a Wimbledon mixed title and been a doubles finalist 3 times, so her game can't be that bad for grass. Christ it would be great if she could sneak in there and make a really deep run in singles.

Sam writes at length about her time with Lyme's disease:

http://samstosur.com/2011/12/01/my-b...-lyme-disease/

Hard to read with dry eyes, but she tells it all so matter-of-factly, without a trace of self-pity.

Re: Sammy's 2011 Party and Off-Season Thread

Navratilova picks Sam's US Open win as the match of the year...

"I think my favorite match is the U.S. Open final between Sam Stosur and Serena Williams. Williams was a heavy favorite and frankly we were just hoping for a close match. Stosur came out with a solid game plan and was able to execute it. While Stosur faltered at the French two years ago where she was the favorite, she stood toe to toe with Williams. Serena had a brief resurgence when she got fired up after an altercation with the umpire at the beginning of the second set, but again Stosur held her ground and ended up winning in, to me, the biggest surprise of the year. By the way, Kvitova's win was great but not as much of a surprise."—Martina Navratilova

Thanks for this! I've always been curious to hear more details about her Lyme disease 'journey' but figured they would never come. Her account does make me a tad teary-eyed but it also makes my chest puff out with pride for her all the more.

I’m with you guys on this. I could very much see Sam randomly doing well at Wimbledon, partly because she’s not expected to do well there. She plays her best game when the pressure is off. And yeah, her doubles record there along with her singles record at other grass tournaments seem to indicate that it wouldn’t be terribly outlandish for her to go deep at Wimbledon.

Her big problem in the past has been that she's lost early to low-ranked players and so hasn't been around to play the big guns in the final rounds. Interesting stat: in the last three years whenever Sam reached at least the 4th round in a slam she has lost to the eventual winner or not at all. The bad news is that she only reached the 4th round 5 times in those 3 years. For someone as good as Sam that's not good enough.
I too hope that she does well early next season during the lead up to (and including) AO. I just don’t want to see another slow start from her this year – we’ll see what the draws are like. She’s perfectly capable of beating all those players in Brisbane, but as you say, it’s the lower ranked players that are more of a concern (please no Kirilenko!). As for Serena – I’m hesitant to say which way it would go: Serena could trounce Sam with a vengeance or Sam could completely psyche Serena out. Hopefully, the latter will the case.

Re: Sammy's 2011 Party and Off-Season Thread

You lot probably know this already – Sam is playing an exo in Singapore from Dec 16-18 along with Aga, Flavia, and a few others. I know that exhibitions aren’t the same as ‘proper’ tournaments, but if you’re anything like me, you’re dying for a Sammy fix. Besides, I’m looking forward to having the luxury of watching her play relaxed ‘no consequence’ tennis. I just hope the tourney is livestreamed for us.

Her story is really inspiring, to say the least. Being at the top of the world in doubles and then being ill with a career-threatening disease (if not life-threateing), starting almost from scratch and then winning a slam in singles.

I mean, an accomplished athlete finds herself at the mercy of doctors and nurses in the blink of an eye . I know that this is hard for anyone, but for athletes it's much more. But, you know what they say: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Being ill changed Sam's perspective and reshaped her character. And look at what she has done. She is a grand slam winner, well-respected among her peers, one of the fittest players on tour!

P.S. If someone asked me to tell my students an inspiring story, Sam's story would be my pick.

Wow, thanks for posting this. What an absolute nightmare. I know that doctors have the toughest profession in the world and are doing their best, but the way she was brushed off by the people she was seeing is difficult to read. I've had something similar happen to a family member where the person knows that something is seriously wrong, but because nothing is showing up on tests, the doctor keeps sending them away with pain killers and incorrect diagnoses

I know, it's horrible, huh? I can only imagine how frightened Sam must have been (and your poor relative who went through something similar), knowing that something is seriously wrong and the doctors have no clue what it is or even what to test for. It's some consolation knowing that it could have been so much worse for her - Lyme's disease can be even more debilitating than what she experienced and can certainly last far longer.

Yes, but typically, she doesn't sound bitter at being given the runaround by all the doctors and specialists, she pretty much just accepts it happened and is just relieved and happy someone got it right in the end. Classic Sam: "It turned out I was allergic to what they gave me so that made me sick and I knew the pain I had was not sinusitis." If it was me it would have been more like "The fuckers not only screwed up the diagnosis, but gave me crap that made me even more sick".

Yes, and also the fact that she's jet-setting around the world, and trying to play matches and train, rather than being at home with family while this is happening. Imagine if she had made the illness even worse as a consequence of being misdiagnosed and playing too much.

Maybe the anger has been dulled by the passing of a couple of years? Although she's such a mellow person I wouldn't be surprised if the anger never existed in the first place.

I know that I use a lot of profanities when describing my grandma's experiences with her doctors

It's things like this that make the idiotic ravings of some of the trolls over on GM easier to bear. Sam's list of admirers reads like a who's who of the tennis world.
