I wonder if Vika was even worried at that point.

True. The difference between a players number of winners and unforced errors is far more important than her number of winners by itself. A statistic of 8 winners and 8 UE is much better than one of 25 winners and 50 UE even though many are only fixated on the winners.

Congrats! It was a really good match, too. I think Li is one of the favourites to win the tournament now.

I've just realized that if you spell it Sapharova (ph instead of f) then her name is an anagram for Sharapova!

It's possible, yes. She 's been a bit under the radar recently, but while not great her tennis hasn't been that bad either and she seems to be getting some momentum going at just the right time. She needs to because she has lots of points to defend. On the other hand, from Wimbledon onwards she can only improve on her results of last year.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

Makarova had SPs at 15-40 but Hradecka saves the game with 4 aces down the T! 6-2, 5-5
Edit: Hradecka was down 0-4 in TB but then took 7 of the next 8 points: 6-2, 7-6(5)
Caro next.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

I wonder who the 1st young player (1988 born or later) to beat Serena twice will be. If Serena plays long enough I figure it'll almost certainly happen at some point.

Fed started losing multiple times to young players other than Nadal starting in 2008.

Caro, Vika, and Makarova all have 1 win against her (Chan has a 1st set retirement).

Well, Vika 'beat' Serena while she was hampered by an injury so I would not really call it a win. Makarova and Caro beat her while healthy.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

It is a little weird to hear some of us rooting for Maria in the next round, she is not always the most popular player around here. Her record doesn't give us much reason to think she can win but oddly they have only met on clay once before (and that was the green clay of Charleston). As far as the surface goes it is probably fair to consider this their first meeting on a new surface. On form they are both looking good. It sounds very obvious but holding serve will be crucial. Maria has probably been serving her best since the shoulder injury, if she keeps that up she can win. Should be a good match.

Well, some here have an issue with the grunting, but I think that even them respect Sharapova as a competitor. Anyway, I think Sharapova is back to where she was before the shoulder injury, or at least close to that. And on clay she's better than she's ever been. Of course Serena is Serena, but I think Sharapova has a shot here.

I don't want to turn this into the Maria Sharapova subforum but it is a little frightening to think how good she could be if she does get her "old" serve back. Even over the last year when she has managed to climb as high as number two there have been plenty of matches where she struggled with her serve. If she can fix that she will be a much tougher opponent, at least for everyone not named Azarenka.

And even Azarenka came up second best last time they played. On claycourts and grass I'd give the edge to Sharapova against Vika. On hardcourts it's of course a different story.

Jimmie48 is going to hate me for saying this but I completely forgot about the Stuttgart final. That was fairly one-sided.
