Don't get me wrong, I too think Stuttgart is a good tournament. It's a Premier event and the points and prize money are accordingly. Some Premier events traditionally see a better field than others. Sydney, Stuttgart and Eastbourne. Preparation for AO, clay, W'don. Imho it's not more prestigious winning Stuttgart than it is winning Charleston, New Heaven or Bruselles

Of course it is, the tournament has a very long tradition as well (Filderstadt etc.), the tournament is easily one tier above the ones you`ve mentioned. It's the third biggest clay tournament outside of RG.

Stuttgart dosen't have this packed draw because it's preparation for RG. The surface & setting is different, it's the furthest away from the slam compared to the tournaments you mentioned. The players come because the tournament has a lot of prestige.

It's exactly as prestigious because they carry the sane amount of points. However, Maria fans surely think that it's only smaller tournament which 'matters less' and Maria did not win when it matters.

We`re not talking about Tokyo or Bejing here, the players actually care about that tournament...even more than about some that are theoretically higher-ranked.

If they wouldn't care, they wouldn't all show up.
Eh, this year was a bit of a aberration, wasn't it? If you look at the field over the last few years Stuttgart has had a decent field but nothing like this year. This year it had an unusually strong field and it might end up being more competitive than some of the "bigger" tournaments but just looking at the prize money/points Stuttgart is clearly a smaller tournament than the slams/mandatories/premier 5's.

Yes, I agree with that. But even though no WTA tournament should be regarded as a small event there is nevertheless a certain hierarchy among them and Stuttgart ranks pretty high among them, but Indian Wells and Miami rank even higher. All things are relative though in terms of what it takes to win any of these tournaments. Sharapova beating Stosur, Kvitova and Azarenka (the last three slam champions) must be one of the most impressive runs to a title since Li Na's win at the French Open where she beat Kvitova, Azarenka, Sharapova and defending champion Schiavone. Often titles are just regarded as more important or bigger than other titles just because we collectively say they are but it doesn't tell us everything about the achievement involved in winning these or other tournaments.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

I think it obviously makes a difference for the players, seen both by the draw and the quality of play last week.

Nope. You heard what Vika said. Bigger tournament coming up. Serena didnt even show up. But she'll be in Madrid. Maria said she never played it until now. Probably still frustrated from Miami final, & wanted to play again
Nobody would rather have the Porsche than $750,000, and the $750,000 is nothing compared to an FO title.
The stakes get higher, then a little dip in Rome, then VERY high in Paris

Re: Womens Tennis in General

I dont care at all about this onesided loss in Stuttgart if Caroline wins the FO.
I dont even remember if Li played Stuttgart last year or not. But she won the big clay prize. Did Fran play Stuttgart in 2010? Its a Premier, a Tier 2.

Re: Womens Tennis in General

That's not the point, nobody claimed Stuttgart is as important as the RG. No non-slams are as important as the majors.

Whatever, I give up..

Re: Womens Tennis in General

I know what you mean, players like it and it had most of the top 30.

But to me, the loss Caroline had is bad because it forbodes more weak results in bigger tournaments coming up, that arent on hardcourt.

That loss to Kerber could be a foreshadowing of an awful summer, now that 9 months of hardcourt are over

Maybe there's a resemblance to Ludmilla Khartosmilova (spelling?)? A fellow Czech female, middle distance runner from the 80's .. If anyone remembers this athlete they'll understand why I am laughing... Hehehe. Now I cannot stop. .. A little colour. She was so doped up with testosterone that she had a quite visible moustache. When asked about it, her answer was : *with a very VERY deep voice* It comes from the hard training ..

It's just I asked about it in GM. There was no answer at all.
