Los Angeles Event Sinks Before it Starts
As a native Los Angeleno, I was really looking forward to attending the event on several nights, but I will not be buying a ticket.
The decision to not give Davenport a special seeding when she has received one at every other event since her return is preposterous. Certainly she is a more solid player than Dokic, Clijsters, and Henin.
Instead, poor Monica will have to play her in the first round and that will be that for Monica I am afraid. Since she is my fave and will be out in round 1, I see no reason to attend, especially when the seeding committee used no common sense in this matter.
Why can't the end of the year championships go back to the format which was much more successful years ago. Invite the top 8 and play a semi-round robin double elimination format.
I don't think anyone wold miss Farina_elia or some of the others who are at the event. It is the top 8 that are always of most interest.

I agree. Davenport should have got the seed. Seles is too good of a champ to go out first round; as is Davenport.

How can you say that? She ended last year #1! I'm 100% sure that she wouldn't unseeded if she wasn't injured. It's not her fault she was injured! She should be a seed!

It is unfortunate that she did get injured ... but why should Dokic be unseeded when she earned more points this year than Davenport?
Rubin also was injured for a long time ... Should she be seeded as well?

Dokic and Rubin never number 1
Davenport defeated Dokic soundly this year. I believe she beat Rubin as well.
Rubin and Dokic have never been nor ever will be number 1, nor will either one win a grand slam. On the other hand, Lindsay has a shot at additional slams (although is unlikely to be number 1 again).
There are many reasons to have seed Davenport (these are just a few).

As much as I dislike a Monica vs Davenport first round ... no, I don't think Davenport should have been seeded.

Actually, they are 1-1 this year
Davenport def. Rubin 62 26 61 Acura Classic
Rubin def. Davenport 57 76 63 LA

I wouldn't count Monica out so quickly.
Monica is, and always has been, a woman with fire in her belly. She thrives on competition - and hasn't seen any for months, since she left the tour ailing from a consistent, if unspectacular season, in an exhausting schedule.
But when Monica returns, she often returns roaring(often audibly) with determination. Graf was the same. These great champions love competition such that when they come back thresh, they don't take prisoners - they mean war.
Monica is *still* the most formidable competitor in womens' tennis. With her body virtually falling apart - and it won't last much longer - there's no way she'd have been ranked 4th when she last played without that champion's mentality.
Before you go counting this great lady out, consider that she hasn't beaten Davenport in over 5 years, but longs to.
I'd still favour Davenport, but not by much. Monica doesn't lie down for anyone, and never has. Fearlessness has been, and remains, her trademark.

it also works into Seles' favor that Lindsay has struggled to close out sets

this was fair to Henin. Davenport was given a 4-tournament special seeding. When it expired, she got another 4-tournament seeding. I think the WTA is fair.
If we had the ATP rules, Davenport would be ranked #200 and Hingis #180.
I am glad Davenport made it to the Chase Championship. We should be thankful for that.

LOL....so first, people are praying that Lindsay does not continue getting her special exempt seeding because it is unfair, and now they are complaining because she didnt. Make up your minds
She is ranked 11, therefore is unseeded. The way it should be. That is just bad luck for Monica, someone had to draw her (and yes Im a Monica fan too).

Davenport does not deserve the seed. Enough is enough. It may be a tough break and a difficult match for Monica, but Lindsay has already been given everything to the theoretical limit of the IPR rules.

The rule is: no special seedings shall be given in The Championships. The seeds are in the order of rank.
TBE posted the complete rule a few weeks back.
