Re: Julia's 2014 - June - Strawberries and Facepalm

She is not playing any warm-up tournaments

Her best result is R3.

Re: Julia's 2014 - June - Grass "Season"

One small positive in Julia's game recently is her net play. It's not often, but when she does get up there, she looks comfortable with the volley. I guess that's why doubles is so invaluable to her. That will be useful on grass.

Re: Julia's 2014 - June - Grass "Season"

Julia's run for the Wimbledon title in mixed doubles off to a bad start, losing in Halle in the match tiebreak to Chang/Petko after winning the first set.

She is playing mixed doubles on grass, but skipping singles?

At least it's better than nothing at all...I looked back at her Wimbledon preparation in years past, and only in 2011 did she play a warm-up tournament. In other years, she continued playing on clay after the French Open.

Re: Julia's 2014 - June - Grass "Season"

Actually, she won't compete in mixed doubles in Wimbledon, wants to focus on singles.

Julia Görges und Andrea Petkovic bereiten sich stattdessen auf Wimbledon vor. Dort wird Julia Görges allerdings nicht im Mixed antreten: "Trotz des Erfolgs in Paris liegt der Fokus auf dem Einzel".

Too bad for Michael.

Re: Julia's 2014 - June - Grass "Season"

So at the slam on her strongest surface she plays everything there is and on her weakest surface she wants to focus on singles?

I really don't get her.

It must be a contrarian strategy....

If only she could pretend it was the Olympics.

Hmm, Julia has done relatively well in her career when competing under the German flag. Fed Cup and those Olympics come to mind. Even if she didn't always win, she seems have some extra inspiration or motivation to perform well when playing for country.

She's playing doubles at Eastbourne.

Re: Julia's 2014 - June - Grass "Season"

Really running out of words to describe this stupidity. Now she's playing doubles only tournaments. As someone put it in the German part, either she's delusional or she really is on the highway to become a doubles specialist.

I don't think grass is Julias worst surface, she's done pretty well there in the past, if you ignore last years fiasco.

This is what I've always noted about Julia--she really does play better when playing on a team, whether it's for her country or as part of a doubles pairing. I think it's a psychological thing with her, which is understandable. "Winning one for the team" is a psychological boost and may help to keep her on track during a match. If only she could find a similar inspiration for singles.

Her strategy makes as much sense as her statements, in other words.

It will be interesting to see what this "doubles only" then "singles only" strategy yields. It's really odd, though, coming off a Slam mixed doubles final, that she would skip the opportunity to repeat her performance, not to mention the easy money. Also, she did make it to the QFs last year at Wimbledon with BZS despite a bum wrist and a coach who could barely watch her play.
