Explanation

This was a series of events for men and women sponsored by the Commercial Union Bank. A minimum of 10 events entered was needed to qualify for the bonus pool. An exception was made for Margaret Court, due to her "domestic circumstances" (pregnancy) Unlike the men's series, there was no Masters event. Most events (16 of the 29) were also part of the WT (World Tennis) Pro Tour, which had Virginia Slims as it's main sponsor.

Events were organized into 5 levels-AA, A, B, C, and D

Events with an * were also part of the WT (World Tennis) Pro Tour.

Draw Notes:

The Aussie site has "Sandra" Hole. Most sources have "Sue." It's the same person. Here I use Sue as it appears to be the name she went by most often.

It's Ann Lebedeff for certain, and not Leberdoff. As of 2011 she is a coach at Pomona College.

The Goolagong-Gouraly score is conformed by the New York Times.

Summary:

Goolagong and Wade were the only members of the top 10 entered. Even many Aussies skipped their national championships to play the Slims circuit in the US. A pregnant Margaret Court was unable to defend her title. The Aussie LTA helped to scuttle their own national event by banning Melville, L.Hunt, and Dalton from the tourney for playing a tuneup event in Auckland instead of the one in Queensland.

Wade entered with the express purpose of gaining revenge over Goolagong for a Fed Cup defeat the previous year. The two easily gained the final "Evonne in her lighthearted way and Virginia remorseless and unsmiling as ever."

During the event Evonne was awarded the MBE (Member British Empire) by the Queen. When she came ot for her semi vs Gourlay the crowd of 5,308 gave her an ovation in recognition of the honor. While Evonne got cheers Virginia got a scare, as Harris held two set points in the first set tiebreak and then took the second set before Wade righted the ship and waltzed thrugh the third with a bagel.

On finals day over 12,500 were packed in an arena whose capacity was 11,800. It was the largest finals day ever. The record crowds of 47,500 beat the previous 1969 record of 33,000 by far. Wade was down 0-3 in set one, but never looked back afterwards, running up a 6-4 5-1 lead. Evonne sent hopes up by coming back to 4-5, but Miss Wade clinched her third match point.

Absentee Billie Jean must have rued not coming to Melbourne after the US Open, for she was unbeaten in slams for 1972 and may have had a shot at the grand slam.

Draw notes:
Elizabeth Craig is married.
Ugarte has Kerry Walker rather than Kathy-double check.
Ugarte has a score of 6-1 6-1 rather than 6-4 6-1-double check.
The odd QF doubles score is from the NYT. Were pro sets played in dubs due to rain?

This is one of Fromholtz's first events-she is only 15.

(Summary per John Dolan book)

Goolagong smacks Wade down in 58 minutes, with Evonne concentrating most of her serves on Wade's backhand. Evonne: "I felt keener today than in Melbourne...". Wade had a nasty incident 2 night's before the final when 2 men broke into her hotel room and were standing over her when she woke up and screamed "Get out!". She had a security guard outside her room after that.

Draw note: Ceci Martinez lost in the 1R of qualifying but then got an entry in the Prelims and qualified.

The USTA is now demanding 6% of the prize money as a fee to santion Slims events. The USTA President declares this is the normal sanction fee, a change from the "experimental" fee of $480 they charged last year. The USTA President: " Six percent is the same figure we charge for all events. The women wanted equality with the men. Well now they have it." Larry King, lawyer, promotor of several tour events, and spouse of leading star Billie Jean King, calls it "a power play" by the USTA.

The "Women's Lob" tour rolls on despite USTA threats of a ban on players. 32 women alone compete to qualify for the first event. Only a few default in the qualifying under the threat of a ban.

Casals is upset by vet Judy Tegart. Rosie directed most of her shots to the normally weak Dalton backhand. She was in for a surprise, as the "Old Fruit" has been training with male player back in Australia who "pounded the ball at my backhand, and that helped me a lot."

King-Gunter. "I missed a lot of shots becasue I was of shape. I kept telling myself I didn't deserve to win."

King was down 5-6 0-40 in the first set of the final. Then the "Old Lady" got it together and went on a tear, winning 24 of the next 27 points.

3rd place: Melville d King default

DF: Rosie Casals/Virginia Wade [1] d. Helen Gourlay/Karen Krantzcke 6-4 5-7 7-5

The NYT has Durr seeded #4 and Wade #3. We are using John Dolan's seedings here.

This was both a hard (outdoor) and indoors event. The first 2 rounds were indoors- split between the Long Beach City College Gymnasium and the Cerritos College Men's Gymnasium in Norwalk. The last 2 rounds were outdoors at the Billie Jean King Center in Long Beach.

King said in her 1982 autobiography that she intentionally lost the semifinal match with Francoise Durr because of an argument with her (King's) husband (page 113-114).

Draw note: The NYT has Kay Walker rather than Kathy. For now I am going with Kathy.

With most of the big guns in America Evonne and Olga are the 2 biggies on the Aussie circuit, Wade having gone back to the US after Kooyong. Janet Young was 3 or 4 times times 2 points points from victory vs. Evonne in the semis. Aussie sportsswriter Michael Quirk reported that Evoone got a $1,500 guarentee just to show up in Adelaide (p 92 of WT).

Billie Jean King was planning on being here but suffered a thigh injury in last week's event.

The opening game of the early round Krantzcke-Louie match took 15 minutes in all-going to deuce 12 times. Marcie won the game, then ended up winning only 3 more in going out tamely.

A sold out crowd of 2,3000 for the finals. Wade is the first non-American winner of the US Indoors since Thelma Long in 1953.

Wade after the final: "Gone is the tempestous Virginia but the sportswriters love that adjective."

Francoise Durr more than made up for any lack of fire on Wade's part. After losing the doubles final of sudden-death point the fiery Frankie smashed her racquet to bits as a bemused Virginia smirked.

Draw note: My Durr score differs from both J dolan;s and Ugarte's. I am using the New York Times, score, which explicitly cites Durr winning 12 consecutive games.

The press dubbed the event "Fort Lauderdale vs the World". The local (and amateur) clay court dollies are lined up to combat the veteran pro women. On day 1 Jeanne Evert, only 14, upsets #2 seed Casals befoee 3,300. The 5 foot and only 90 pound "Jeannie". Rosie's tactic of drop shots followed by passing shots worked for one set, but she found herself chasing drop shots and then being lobbed over.

Jeanne led 4-2 in the decider in the next round before 6 foot Karen Krantzcke sent her back to school.

Durr survived her own 1R scare, coming back from 4-6 1-4 down to take 12 consecutive games in beating Laurie Fleming, another Floridian.

Top seed Billie Jean King registers an important win over her former bete noir Nancy Richey Gunter. Its King's 6th consecutive win over an opponent who is tough on clay. Speculating on a match with Chris, she said, "I wouldn't mind playing her. She's got a good attitude and goes out there and does her best."

Evert crushes Billie Jean in a final watched by a sellout of 3,500. It was so packed people were sitting in the aisles an hour before the final. Hundreds more crowded onto apartment roofs overlooking the court.

The blowout is the worst loss of King's career to date. Chrissie had spent the last five months working on her serve-and it showed. "I served about 150 a day". King begged to differ, later saying "her serve still isn't that hot." Afterwards Chris made the crowd laugh when she said before the event she was afraid of being rusty. King graciously said to the crowd, "The only thing I have to say to Chris is that you played too well. Good luck to all the tow-handed backhand kids."

King on the match in the press conference afterwards: "I can't remember losing a match that bad...My game stunk from the start. Chris kept knocking the ball back, waiting for me to make mistakes, And baby, I made em!"

Billie Jean wasn't willing to concede a toally glorious future for the young phenom. "I'm anxious to see what happens to her after all this attention. ..If she comes out on Tour, she'll find out the facts of life."
King predicted that Evert had reached had reached her peak at a young age, comparing her to Nancy Richey. (I need to source the exact quote-found in Tennis Australia).

Evert on King's poor performance: "Concentration-that's where Billie Jean failed today." She also later said, "Let's face it. Billie Jean was never in it."

Evert's father Jimmy was guarded about the result. "I'm noy so sure a lopsided win was such a good thing. Everybody will by out to get her, and don't worry, she'll be thrown to the wolves." The women pros left no doubts whose side they were on, louding cheering for King. Chris: "I heard the other pros cheering for Billie Jean. Of course I heard them. How could I have helped it-by putting cotton in my ears?" "Go get her Billie Jean!" was the pro contingents cry during play.

Of course King also had boisterous fans to contend with. Playing in what was practically Evert's back yard she faced a heavily pro-Evert crowd and Chris's rapid high school classmates. Her high school band led a parade march around the center court before the final. In response Pompano Beach, a club that sponsers King, flew a plane with a banner overhead that read, "We Love you Billie Jean!" King approved of the pre-match demonstration and showed no annoyance at the crowd,

The "Chrissie Factor" spelled success for the event-with total attendence of 17,000; a tour record so far for 1972. The organizer George Liddy must have been happy Chris won-as an amateur she was not eligible to collect the first prize of $4,400. As compensation he says he will fund the Evert clan's trip to Wimbledon.

2. Liem/Siler d Kemmer/Vinton 6-7 6-1 5-4 (tiebreak score) in the Consolation Doubles final. Was this
in any way connected to the main doubles draw?

The dour 1R Durr-Gunter match lasts 2 hours. In the quarterfinals both top seeds go out to qualifiers, with Stove breaking serve once in the first set and then following that by saving 4 sets points from 1-4 in the tiebreak. Ziegenfuss takes out the #5 seed (Gourlay) then Durr (#2) in the QF, and finally #6 Dalton in the semis. It's the first time a qualifier has ever made the finals of Slims event.

Val is no match for Rosie Casals in the final. Her win here puts Rosie at #1 in overall prize money on the tour through 5 events.

The USTA drops its demand of a 6% sanction fee, settling for $480 per event instead. This is major victory for tour founder Gladys Heldman, who also announces the minimum prize money for tour events is now set at $18,000.

A New Tork Times releases an article piece on Chris Evert titled "The Girl Who Grew Up on Center Court"

The budding teen wants to be called Chris, not "Chrissie". She's added a half-inch (now 5' 5" according to the Times) and 5 pounds to her thin frame. The bubble-gum chewing teen expressed disdain for the monikers "Little Poker Face" and "Cinderella in tennis shoes." Evert said, "That poker face thing is so blah-and I don't like the Cinderella thing either."

The unflappable Floridian may not show emotions on the court. Practice is different matter however. On the odd occasion Miss Evert has broken a few racquets in anger. Jimmy Evert was quoted in the Miami News, stating, " She has broken four racquetrs in the last four months."

The tiny venue (capacity 1,750) is sold out for the entire event in anticipation of another King-Evert clash. A bombshell story quickly shakes up the event, as a Washington Post story headlined, "Abortion made Possible Mrs King's Top Year" broke.

The next day ever crafty Julie Heldman quickly spoils the dream final by upsetting King in the opening round. Billie Jean was suffering from a bad knee and an infected toe. Organizers gave Billie jean an extra day's rest, but she wasn't up to running all day, and in Julie's words King gave her the third set "on a silver platter, I don't think she wanted to be out there". Billie Jean walks out of the press conference when the reporter who wrote the abortion story refused to leave. Billie Jean withdraws from the doubles, and also announces she will take a break from the tour, citing the physical and emotional stress of playing to reach the $100,000 prize money record she set in 1971.

Nancy Gunter plows through the upper half of the draw left open by King's loss, reaching the final without the loss of a set. Evert also advanced through all her matches in straights. Nancy practiced with her brother Cliff before the Sunday final. It was nip and tuck in the opening set, which lasts 56 minutes. Evert led 4-2 but the momentum swung back. The key moment came in the tiebreak. Richey took the set with 3 straight points from 2-1. Nancy: "She was either getting tired or getting shaky when I won those 3 points quickly".

Evert wasn't too unhappy, after all this was her first event ever indoors.

Chris: "I don't think anyone would have beaten Nancy today, the way she played."

The absence of King and Evert was a golden opportunity seized on by Kerry Melville. In front of a capacity crowd of 1,700 the Aussie has her first match point at 6-3 5-1 40-15, then lets 4 more slip by as the score goes to 5-5. Kerry serves for it again at 6-5 but double faults on break point. In the tiebreal she has more match points at 4-3. When Casals won the second set tiebreak one felt she had the momemtum, yet Kerry finally took the match 16 games after her first match point. "I thought I'd never win it," the pixie-like Melville declared, "but I was determined I wasn't going to lose." This is Melville's first tournament win since Auckland in 1971.

Despite the lack of big names the event nets $35,000 in ticket sales, up $4,000 from last year

The national media descended on Dallas in droves, salivating at the prospect of a first meeting between the American "Cinderella" Chris Evert and ingenue Evonne Goolagong. This is Evonne's first WT Pro tour event and her first ever tournament in the United States.

The Tennis Gods of the draw were not so kind however, and placed Billie Jean, Chris, and Evonne in the same upper half of the draw.

Evonne promptly throws a scare into everyone by being only two points from defeat vs Gilchrist in the opening round. A Goolagong-Evert encounter was still alive.

"Old Lady" Billie Jean King spoiled it all though by whipping both of her younger rivals in back to back matches. First she took down Evert. Billie Jean clawed back from a set and 1-3 down, ignoring leg cramps. In Billie Jean's words she thought, "Don't give up. Guts it out." Evert confessed to thinking ahead afterwards, "I started thinking about what I was going to do after I had won. I was thinking of playing Evonne."

King: "I thought about winning amatch one time when I was about 16-and I lost. I have never done that again."

The Californain twice threw her racquet in anger after questionable line calls. King put Evert away on the third match point. Later on she played a doubles match that went past midnight.

The next night Billie Jean did it again. "The Old Lady is not over the hill yet", she exclaimed after upsetting Goolagong in 3 arduous sets. "I was so sore I didn't think I'd be able to move." After a tame first set, where she a shadow of herself, King stormed the net. In one glorious stretch she lost only 1 point through 4 service games. It was Evonne who crumbled down the stretch.

The last twist came in the final, where King said she "just ran out of gas" in a 65 minute final. Nancy Richey Gunter sailed through the bottom half the draw after Lesley Hunt upset #2 seed Casals in 2 hrs 10 minutes. This match stopped an 8 match losing streak Nancy had vs Billie Jean. With the $19,000 first prize Gunter now leads the tour in prize money winnings.

More from Billie Jean on the final: "My legs were hurting and Nancy knew it and kept hitting the ball at my feet. I was low on adrenalin. Those earlier matches took it all out of me."

Nancy: "it's nice to win some real money after playing so long for nothing. I think I'm serving better now, better than I ever have."

The gals played in front of a packed house all week at the tiny T-Bar, which held only 1,500. Many in the ritzy crowd wore black ties and dresses.

Half a world away former #1 Margaret Court gives birth to a son on March 6. Within a few weeks she is announcing a planned return to the tour in the summer.
