First set went the way of Shafanovic 7-5. PäikesePoole led 3-0 in the first, Shafanovic raised his game and broke back to level at 3-3. Both held the next 2 games before Shafanovic broke to lead for the first time in the match. PäikesePoole, however broke straight back to level 5-5. Shafanovic continued the breaking trend and broke to lead once again at 6-5. A stunning winner sealed the set to Shafanovic at 7 games to 5.

Shafanovic continued his form at the beginning of the second set going up 4-1, but PäisekePoole's fighting spirit brought him back to 4-4. Both held serve for the next 2 games before PäisekePoole broke for 6-5. The pressure was too much for him however as he lost his service game to love with a double fault to give the break back and take the second set to a tiebreak. The pressure got to him again when he led 4-0 in the tiebreak almost giving Shafanovic the match. A fatigue Shafanovic, however, gave PäisekePoole the tiebreak 7-5 and the set 7-6.
