That's basically what Sharapova does. Why do you feel the need to wail? Does it hurt when you hit the tennis ball or something? It's ridiculous IMO. You don't hear boxers, even female ones squeal when they throw a punch and there's more force put into that along with more physical pain.

Its like in martial arts when you are told to shout/scream when you do an attack. Its not something you do naturally, but the theory is that you will release more energy if you do it. I would not argue with sporting theory developed over centuries of experience.

I used to grunt actually when I was too much into the game and we were playing already some hours I simply couldn´t play after 2-3 hours without grunting, and as childs we were playing a lot of tennis during holidays You are getting much more exhausted without some "good breathing" and I´m sure most of you would be grunting too in a 3 setter in +30 even when you wouldn´t play a profi match  As I was getting older and "stronger" then I stopped, but while serving I´m still...not grunting...it´s something like blowing...also in 3rd set when I´m too exhausted...and I don´t play a lot nowadays (actually I even don´t remember when I played last match...sweet childhood ) so I´m getting exhausted too early. |

Only if my opponent did. Then I would copy them, with a Schiavone/Bovina-like delay. Especially after drop volleys.
