She is physically strong and should have a great future.” (From “The Field”, September 6, 1913.)

*Draw note: In sourcesof the era Colston was often listed as Miss B. G. Colston. Her full name was Blanche Gladys Colston. She may have at times used her middle name of Gladys.

A romantic scandal rocks the tennis world this week. Major Henry Saunderson Laverton sues his wife Margaret (nee Sims, or Manley-Simms) for divorce, citing tennis star Gordon Lowe as corespondent. Mr Laverton had the pair followed after finding letters that Mrs Laverton had written Lowe. They were spotted both checking into a London hotel. Mrs Laverton is also a tennis player and Mr Lowe's mixed doubles partner. The major was granted his divorce, with custody of their child. Gordon Lowe married Margaret in 1914. She later created another tempest in 1921, when she was arrested for stealing cash on the Riviera to cover her gambling debts.

Elisabeth Moore won 5 singles matches (and played 99 games) in one day to take the title. Mrs. C. N. Beard played 5 singles matches and 102 games in one day on her way to a second place finish. "A strong wind interfered with the playing of the finalists, from which Mrs. Beard appeared to suffer the most. Miss Moore ... was steady, while her opponent was erratic, making a number of net shots and going out of bounds." Beard led 4-2 in the second set before Moore won 5 of the next 6 games to win the match. The club was located at 149th Street and Convent Avenue.
