2: Zoe De Bruyker def. Esther Goldfield 6-1; 3-6; 7-6 (5) (Heartbreaking loss for Esther)
3: Rachel Kahan def. Shinann Featherston 6-1; 6-1 (Just for the record, Shinann's record against Duke is abysmal...)
4: Hanna Mar def. Caroline Price 6-2; 4-6; 6-1
5: Mary Clayton def. Gina Suarez Malaguti 6-3; 5-7; 7-5 (another close match between these two, and another Clayton victory)

Yeah. Carolina should be playing Zoe at number one, and then it would have been 6-1 instead of 5-2, but even still, I did not expect this to be as close as it was. UNC always plays much better against Duke than they do against anyone else, and that's true in any sport.

I was thinking the same thing.

Congrats Duke! Kahan seems to be in form again. Bodes well for their chances at NCAAs.

Re: Acc

Quick question: do you guys feel like Whitney Kay is better than Shinann Featherston? I know Ashley Dai is a definite improvement over the other two seniors leaving (Haley Hemm and Jennifer Stone), but I was wondering if Whitney is an improvement over Shinann? Haven't seen Kay play enough to know and am wondering if my Heels are going to be better next year

can't say...but Kay is a pretty good dbls player, that's for sure. Won National G16, finalist in G18 with Christian, won the Clay National last year with Price..Dunno about her current form though.

Re: Acc

Match could've gone either way, congrats to Duke who was more consistent. I just watched the Ojai final between monica and dai, and i think dai has a lot of potential. Monica also plays more like Reka... sigh

Thanks fantic! Ok last question I promise: do you think Hayley Carter is an upgrade to Zoe De Bruycker and Lauren McHale? I've only seen Carter play 2 matches so I was wondering what you and ipatty's take on this is since I think you've both watched her play more. Thanks!

Re: Acc

you can ask questions any time, sorry if my responses are not satisfactory

Well..I think she 'can' be an upgrade of Zoe..after all beating Andrews and Austin consecutively is no mean feat..but I think iPatty can answer more satisfactorily than me

Re: Acc

GT def. UA

video included of mp; nice drive and approach and a fantastic passing shot by Lilley

And Lilley's body language during the interview, she's quite excited

""I think Alabama, most teams across the country would say they're one of the best doubles teams in the country," Shelton said. "If you look at their record, they've won almost every single doubles point this year, playing in a tough SEC conference, so we knew that would be a tough point."

""I thought Elizabeth did a good job of getting up in that first set," Shelton said. "When we went inside, I thought her opponent took advantage of the indoor courts and played some of her best tennis and it was just too good on that court. I thought Jillian had a real chance, you have to hand her opponent Mary a lot of credit, she played like a champ, she played like a senior out there"

"women's tennis coach Bryan Shelton called his team's win over Alabama one of the greatest matches he has witnessed."

Re: Acc

A (nother) Fairytale Ending

"There might have been 15 Tech fans there Saturday among 600 or 700, and although they were full-throated, the Yellow Jacket voices were drowned in a sea of Crimson Tide.

When weather forced the Alabama-Tech match indoors, "it was deafening. The atmosphere was incredible. The umpires were trying to control it just so the girls could serve," said the Tech head coach.

"We hadn't really seen an environment like that all year. Their players definitely fed off of it. Our girls were really struggling to hear me, even during the changeovers."

The Jackets hadn't seen that kind of fuss largely because, frankly, that's not typical for college tennis. Yet the Alabama women were ramped up and on the verge of extending the best season they've had in several years."

-----------

"For it to come down to that moment to prolong her college career, and our season . . . she's had some physical struggles this season, and some confidence issues," Shelton said. "She didn't have a ton of good matches to draw from, to look back on and think, 'I can do this.' Caroline had a lot of hard work, though, and I think she leaned on that."

With so much in the balance, Lilley at that point had a 6-6 record in dual meets. She'd gone 3-4 in an injury-plagued conference season, and there was all that noise, noise, noise.

"I was kind of giving myself a little pep talk, telling myself that if we lose it had been a great match," Shelton said. "And I was going to be happy for Jenny Mainz, the Alabama coach. I know her well and respect her."
-------------

"And Lilley stole it with a backhand down the line and past Guarachi for a 7-5 win in the final set. Down 5-3 and in a cauldron, she won four straight games to send Tech to Athens.

She, "played the best tennis of her college career," Shelton said. "That's the most pressure we've felt all season. It was do or die.""

-------------
"Catherine Harrison will soon be in the thick of things for the Jackets.

She's probably the top recruit in perhaps the best class Shelton has ever recruited. The incoming freshman class of four is ranked No. 2 in the nation. Harrison, who last summer played in the Wimbledon girls singles and doubles championships, traveled from the Memphis area to get a sense of what lies ahead.

"It was an incredible environment. I wish I could get all the prospects in there to see something like that . . . It surely didn't disappoint.""

Re: Acc

Coach Shelton interview

"One thing that we always want to guard against is feeling happy with yourself or not being ready for the next opportunity to capitalize on one. I want her to be greedy. Not settle for just good when you can have great."

" I think you have to change some things. There's times when you have to be a little bit more aggressive with the coaching, there are times you sit back a little bit more. I always feel that at this time of year, we've been coaching so much, that this is the time where you would like to get out of the way a little bit more. Allow them to go out there and play. They should have some confidence that they do well and they have what it takes to be successful. So part of the coach's role is to get out of the way sometimes. So I tend to do that a little bit more this time of year. Also, focus not so much on the X's and O's but focusing a little bit more on just taking care of the intangible things. Making sure the girls are approaching each match with the right mindset, the right attitude, knowing that they're going to hustle, knowing that they're going to be really stingy on the court. Take care of things that they can control and the controllable things. Not worry about the things they can't control. The ones that do that the best will be the ones that are successful."

No. 7 Tar Heels Head Back To NCAA Round Of 16

"Back on court three, Featherston, who was starting to battle leg cramps, had called for her medical timeout between games at 5-all.

Price, who had also used a medical timeout for cramps in the third set,"

"The victory puts UNC into the round of 16 for the third consecutive season and the eighth time in program history. "
