Will try to keep this brief....This is not a slap at you Europeans, but I think that the popularity of Day-care Nanny Socialism stems from the delusion that government can somehow learn to avoid societal problems by regulating all aspects of our lives...and manage to placate everyone who complains by passing out monthly goody baskets--even though there's no money in the treasury to PAY for such handouts. As you hint at,the ultimate goal of these Nanny Socialists is a unified One World government that far surpasses the EU in scope.

Most of the rich folks I've met are pompous assholes...and I'm ALL in favor of helping the needy get on their feet. However,it's asinine when you have over half the country getting government handouts...when the economy is already struggling. As much as we hate to admit it,we need those rich folks to run successful businesses so that they can expand and offer jobs to working-class types.Fomenting a bunch of juvenile, ideological Marxist class warfare manure and then raising crippling business regulations only drives investors overseas where they can build factories with those who maintain slave labor conditions like the PRC...and then we'll have ZERO jobs available.Great plan!

We had a jackass named Manuel Obrador,a Hugo Chavez puppet, who almost won our presidency and imposed such garbage on us back in 2006....And now Obrador's slick-talking fraud of a negro cousin is running the U.S. economy STRAIGHT DOWN THE TOILET.You try to point people towards Athens to explain what happens when the Sugar Daddy money inevitably runs out,but it goes back to the old saying: A hard head will invariably lead to a soft ass...and there are gonna be a whole lot of soft asses, who learnt the hard way,on this planet in the coming years

There was a nice widow who had this house before I did,and I think that she had some workmen caulk with boric acid b/c I haven't seen one single roach on the interior in my six months here

Well, if they wanted only as much they'd probably stay in their own countries and at least save on the flight tickets. Many old EU countries depend on this workforce, especially when it comes to certain industries (in particular the ones where manual labour is involved).
Migrant workers can feed themselves most of the time. It's a lot worse when it comes to layabouts taking advantage of a still generous social system. People who never worked and never intended to do so...

Well ... if You are Mexican and sneaks over the US/Mexican border, you're not entitled to US welfare. Neither did the US and Canada open their border for all Mexicans, when NAFTA was signed.

In Europe however, it's different. Bar a few restrictions, which are about to expire, all EU citizens can move to any EU country and is thereby entitled to same welfare package as everyone else living in that EU country.

Not surprisingly, Rumanian families with their 10 children are now flocking to Germany. Several German cities have seen such large inflow of new east families, they've had to ask the Federal government for assistance.

In the UK, they're trying to discourage Bulgarians and Rumanians to move to the UK with different campaigns. One telling those new EU citizens how poor the weather is .. (quite amusing actually).

When new EU citizens earn a fraction in their own country compared to welfare in say Germany and the UK, it doesn't take a PhD in economics to figure out in which direction the immigration will flow. As those behind the EU expanding towards East aren't imbeciles, one can only conclude, this was the desired effect all along.

The effect already has been rising unemployment in old EU countries and pressure on wages. Pure supply side economics. Again, you don't need a PhD to have been able to predict this development.

West Germany managed to incorporate their poor cousins from East Germany during a decade. An amazing effort and no doubt no other country in Europe would be able and willing to go through those sacrifices needed to do this.

Now EU has been expanded with 5 times East Germany.

Personally, I fear we'll see social unrest and political polarization in Europe in ways we've not seen in the last 60 odd years.

Re: On the Concept of Irony w/ Continual Reference to Caro, the #1 Sunshine Queen

And that's exactly the group of people that I was NOT referring to. Those who can feed themselves = those who work. The people abusing benefits can be found amongst the locals, too. I once read about an English lady who had a large family (not sure about a no. of kids), never worked and complained that the council house they received was far too small. When asked why she never worked her reply was that she tried some jobs but they were far too boring. Her hubby did not work neither,of course. And, this lovely couple managed to cash cca 40k a year on benefits.

Or,there was this really morbid case of a woman who was fooling social services and taking child support for her deceased son. Some people have a stomach to do anything it seems.

And, as far as the unemployement goes, there are different reasons why people are unemployed. One of them being that some individuals feel that it's not worth it to go out there and look for work. It doesn't take a Phd to work that out neither.

Re: On the Concept of Irony w/ Continual Reference to Caro, the #1 Sunshine Queen

There's a French film which came out last year that has a similar subplot within that sets the scene. In Mexico, titles are often changed to make the films more marketable and, down here, the film was titled,'Amigos'(Friends).

There's a Frenchman with Senegalese roots who's purposely looking for rejections at job interviews--with confirming signatures from the 'rejectors'--so that he can continue collecting unemployment benefits. The twist is that a wealthy quadriplegic widower actually hires him,and they go on to build a deep bond with each other...it's a dramatic comedy,as you might guess

Yes,that's the one,and a direct translation of the title wouldn't make any sense,marketing-wise,to Mexican viewers,so they simply re-titled it "Friends" down here.My gf and I saw it with Spanish subtitles...and I got to see how much French I recalled from high school. She liked it a whole lot and I enjoyed it,too

I heard some economy experts saying Japan would be the next country to go bankrupt because of unsustainable government debt even before the United States and European Union. Which is a pretty interesting thing on different levels imho. Because Japan was an absolute capitalistic success story since end of World War II and even more they have a work ethic in which it isnt socially acceptable to laze around, they always had few immigrants they would need to feed, they dont have to spent much for the military cause USA is ruling their military and defense politics, they have pretty weak unions compared to Europe and America. So if they fail maybe it could be because the economy system changed a lot since 1945 with this much speculative money in the economy which hardly creates industralial jobs or even has anything to do with the real economy. but maybe this is a marxist opinion.

Other thing thats interesting there in my eyes are the different opinions out there in the economy community, with some folks arguing they would master this crisis better than mediterranian countries cause they have their own currency and governent can implement inflation/deflation policy as they wish, whereas others say this wouldnt help at all. Should be a good indicator to see when and if quantative easing will ruin the US.

I also just think it will be really difficult for people to accept that we wont have the social welfare state in Europe anymore in the 21 th century in which people had a comfortable life. In some countries its still kind of working like Scandinavia but not long anymore i guess. In the end it will be the reality cause of Globalization, the weak birth rate in Europe, the inmigration etc, but most likely general living standard will be much lower in 50 years than it is now even if people try to adept to the necessities of the new economical situation. but what can you do, its just a grey prospect.

I think in your region Costa Rica had a much better living standard, less violence than neighboring countries too. But there are slightly difficult reasons for that than in case of the prosperity advantage Europe had have. Dont know how much welfare state they have and how the drug war and Cafta will effect their economy and society.

Also just wanted to point out, that social unrest in China will break out at large scale too in the next decades imho like we can expect them for Europe for different reasons obviously and that East Germany mostly still is much poorer than the old part of BRD, which shows what the economical loser countries in Europe can expect.

Japan is the globe's largest creditor nation. Their debt is an internal distribution issue. I doubt you'll find any credible economist claiming Japan is going 'bankrupt' ..

As for social unrest in China, Europe, we agree.

Wow! You've left a very well-thought post for your entry at TF.I'll warn you now that many, many posters here aren't nearly as contemplative as you are.I'm definitely no expert when it comes to fiscal matters, yet I have enough common sense to figure out that compassionate government assistance should be reserved for the TRULY needy;creating an 'entitlement culture' is just a recipe for disaster. It may sound a bit cynical, but I don't think that Obrador or his slick-talking black-American cousin really give a rat's ass about helping the poor reach economic stability. They seem more concerned with creating a society of junkies who are dependent on their monthly entitlement fix...and will slavishly re-elect their office-holding pushers

Am not trying to put Mona Barthel down in ANY way,but it was fairly obvious,in past photos, that she was dealing with a rather unsightly skin condition on her face and neck.I recently saw some Paris Indoor interviews where it appeared that she had gotten some sort of treatment to remedy her symptoms;however,it may simply be a case where the video crew filmed her from a more flattering angle to conceal the problem...or perhaps this is an intermittent condition that only affects her SOMEtimes and not others.None of this has ANY reflection on who Barthel is as a person,of course, but I'm just curious: Can anyone offer any informed input on this matter??

Cameron Diaz, same deal. You would be amazed at the amount of slap that is used for studio lighting, and at the number of celebreties with blemishes.

As far as I can tell,Barthel is a humble,well-mannered gal...almost the polar opposite of Diaz.Wouldn't you agree that one of the best punishments for certain scummy celebs is how they vainly, helplessly struggle against Time? Being rendered helpless might be a worse punishment than the death penalty for many of those types

Doesn't matter if you're young, old, stunning, or flawed, they still lay it on heavy in the studio.

No. I have no illusions about the celebrity condition, and suggest that a punishment of education be administered to their admirers instead. Without an audience...
