Not when I'm talking to someone from the US, Jimmie. If I call it football he would think that I'm talking about Al Bundy's touchdown game.

I'm right there with you. It causes some confusion but I always refer to soccer as football and that other sport as American football.

Why do they call it football anyway? They barely use their feet!

They call it football because,in a fight between football and soccer players, the TRUE footballers--whether it be NFL,rugby or Aussie Rules--would bitch-slap the sissy soccer players off the field in under two minutes...heck,less than ONE probably...and that gives them bragging rights to name their sport

Re: On the Concept of Irony w/ Continual Reference to Caro:Off-topic 4 the POPULAR #1

Would like some feedback from some of you who have played a lot more tennis than I have:

Yesterday,8th-seeded Ksenia Pervak was steamrolled by the unremarkable Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in under 48 minutes!!!During this double bagel,Pervak had only one GAME point,NOT break point, the entire match.I understand that Pervak may have been fatigued from finishing her rain-delayed QF only 75 minutes earlier...but is that really a valid excuse for getting so decisively destroyed by an ITF-caliber gal??Pervak's QF lasted 1 hour,50 minutes, yet that includes the three games of match play between her and Pous-Tio from the previous day...so one might estimate that those three games lasted between 10 to 20 minutes on red clay...meaning that Pervak only played for around 1 hour,30 minutes in her QF on Saturday prior to the semifinal.

My guess is that young Pervak fell behind early and mentally checked out with all the Austrian fans cheering for their hometown Patricia.Like I said,I won't deny that fatigue was a FACTOR...but not to the extent where it could rationalize away such an annihilation at the hands of such a mediocre player.....Comments and rebukes are welcome

It would depend on the context such as where the posters are from or references to players/plays.

American football is real football not this soccer crap.

There's a mental component though.

The US had plenty of chances before the penalty kicks. I guess it's like breaking to serve for the match but then failing to serve it out. Heh. <bitter chuckle>

I'm glad Caro wasn't playing today as she would have probably lost. A lot of the times it seems like the sports teams/players I root for win as group. If one wins on a given day, others will probably win and the reverse alas as well. At least that's how things seem to work out for me.

Although I agree with you,Protoss(listen to the griping of mis paisanos mexicanos),we have to give some credit to the Aussie players and rugby-ers,too,cuz they put their asses on the line with some of those collisions.

Tennis is a funny sport. If I could single out one of your favourites look at some of Petra Kvitova's results this season. She wins Brisbane and Paris and makes the quarters at the Australian Open then loses to Ayumi Morita in the first round of Dubai, Zahlavova Strycova in her first match at Indian Wells and, most puzzlingly, Kristina Barrois in the first round at an ITF event in Nassau. Then she wins Madrid, makes the final at Eastbourne and wins Wimbledon. Sure, she is known to be a streaky player but so far she is having some very high highs and some very low lows.

I have been informed by a fan of Petra that there are reasons for those losses (injuries/tiredness) and that may be true but on paper they look very puzzling.

Now, none of Petra's losses were complete blowouts like the match you cited but I'm not sure when the last time was that we had a player win a slam and lose in the first round of an ITF event in the same season.

I remember a painful day a few weeks back where three of the favourites to win Wimbledon all lost on the same day (Serena, Venus and some Danish girl). A few weeks before that at Roland Garros 6 of the top 10, including 1, 2 and 3 and the previous years finalist, had all lost by the end of the fourth round. These days the WTA is completely wide open and more than ever on any given day any player can suffer an inexplicable loss.

You rightly point out Petra's loss to Morita,DIAH.....but she didn't lose to Morita 6-0,6-0....in under 48 minutes....with only one game point the entire match....some 'slight' differences there

Can't believe how you feigned ignorance earlier when Canada has her very own football LEAGUE...of course,I've watched it once or twice...and it really IS lame compared to the U.S. version...sort of like comparing U.S. soccer to the European variety

Doesn't bother me, mate. I'm not a big fan of teamsports. I mean, I can watch it wihout getting bored, but that's about it. I've never been as interested in soccer as most European people here probably are and I've never had a favorite team (except for Liverpool of course ). I watch the world cup though. American Football is rarely on the telly over here, except for the Superbowl which I usually watch.

I feel the same way. I love Martina, but Serena is not the enemy - she's a rival.
