Flavia Pennetta had a stellar 2010, particularly in doubles, winning seven titles with Gisela Dulko, with whom she finished the year as the No.1 doubles team in the world. Here's the Italian trailblazer in her own words...

On her off-season training regime...
"My daily regime was pretty much the same as last pre-season: training, training, training! I always do two sessions in a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In the morning I try to focus on fitness by doing gym and body activities like treadmill, bike and weights; in the afternoon I play tennis."

On time off...
"This pre-season was a bit short for me since after the Fed Cup final I had surgery on my left eye. I had to stop for two weeks, which was my only "relaxing". It wasn't a great way to relax, but I couldn't do it in a different way! At Christmas I went back home to my family. To be together with my sister and my friends and to eat so many delicious things my mother cooked was great!"

On 2010...
"With Gisela we really did something special! We began to play doubles together because we are very good friends but we didn't expect to be so good together on court... so game after game we are now the No.1 team in the world!"

On 2011...
"Pre-season training is very important because it is the time to work on faults and to analyze what must be done better in the new year. Together with Gaby, my coach, we decided to play fewer tournaments than in 2010. Statistics and media said that I was the player who played the most in 2010 and that I travelled so much, like three times around the world! I hope to do as great this year."

Well, now she has an extra week to train *sigh*

Il buongiorno non si vede dal mattino. Flavia Permetta deve ritirarsi dal torneo di Brisbane (220.000 , cemento), partito ieri, prima ancora di cominciare a giocare: avrebbe esordito oggi nel derby contro la Vinci (in tabellone c'è anche la Errani). Flavia, che in Australia era la sesta testa di serie, è stata vittima di un'intossicazione alimentare, come ha confermato papà Oronzo, probabilmente contratta in aereo e che si è manifestata in modo 'molto virulento nella notte tra sabato e ieri, quando si pensava addirittura che fosse vittima di un forte attacco di appendicite. La brindisina, dopo una notte in bianco per i forti dolori addominali, è stata portata in ospedale, dove è stata stilata la diagnosi definitiva.
