Interview with Erika at BCR Open:

Erika Sema – Fifth week in Europe



A presence that stood out on the Bucharest clay, the 22 year-old Japanese from Tokio achieved two victories, one in the singles and one in the doubles main draw, with Raluca Olaru. Thursday she flies back to the “Land of the Rising Sun”, with the thought of coming back to Romania next year.


How come you chose to come here at thousands of kilometers distance?

Well, it’s not exactly like that. It’s now five weeks since I have been in Europe: Wimbledon, four weeks in France, and after that I came here. So, not from very far away. Now, I’m going home.

But, still, why precisely BCR Open Romania?

Because it’s a $100.000 competition, so it’s major tournament. I haven’t been here before so I really wanted to come. An it was pretty interesting.

How do you find Bucharest?

I like it. People are so nice, but I didn’t go out, I only stayed in the hotel. And I liked the hotel. But it’s very hot, just like in Japan. But I came From france, where it was chilly, so it was difficult for me to adjust.

You were a few points away from entering the doubles semifinals, with Raluca Olaru...

We fought beautifully. But I think that we should have been more aggressive, to advance to the net more and, also, to play cross more.

How did you choose a Romanian as a partner and why Raluca?

Raluca…She is a nice girls and she plays well. I hope to play with her again. She came to me to ask me to enter the doubles draw together: we knew each other since we were juniors, we were about 17 and we kept in touch since then

Unfortunately Erika lost in R2 to Camerin, but a nice week for her. I hope she has a well earned rest back home now before the US Open.

Erika's not getting much of a rest, playing next week at 100k in China. She'll be a top seed in the weaker field so there is a chance at some BIG points if she is playing well, which it sounds like she was in Bucharest. Yurika will be their also

Unfortunately she lost her 1st round in Bejing and misses a chance for some nice, big and easy points !
But her opponent Pavlovic already advanced to the QF's.

Erika I'm not sure if she is playing again until US Open qualies (she might have a chance at a seed!!), hopefully she comes ready and with 100% to fight

Erika is playing Sharon Fichman. Interesting matchup, both very consistent. I think Erika is the better grinder though, and she usually gets pumped up against opponents who grunt/scream/etc. The serve will probably be important.

After her first round loss in Q of the US OPEN Erika is in the QF's of 25 K Tsukuba

QF's against Chin Wei Chan will be tougher though.

After losing in QF of Tsukuba to eventual finalist Chin-Wei Chan, Erika already won her 1st match in Noto ( another japanese 25 K ) ! But toughest opponent and winner of Tsukuba Nakamura will be her 2nd round opponent .
I hope she can fight it out... I have a bad feeling though
