Bundy Cheney eliminated the defending champion and top ranked Alice Marble in the quarterfinals. This was her only win over Marble in 10 career matches. Bundy Cheney has said that this was the best match win of her career. "From a disappointing first set in which Dorothy was unable to control her shots and take her abundant power, she came back to exhibit steadiness that was too much for a usually unruffled opponent and [employed] free-swinging shots Alice simply couldn't match. Dotty had to come from behind to take the second set. Trailing 4-5, with Miss Marble serving and at ... [match] point, the bounding Bundy, who mixes squeals of delight and a sunny smile with her shots, forced her opponent into a net [error] to bring the score to deuce. She came out best in a long rally at the net to gain a 6-5 lead after the former champion was five times within a point of taking the game, then broke Alice's service in the 12th and deciding game. The last set was simply no contest. Going after the baseline placement that gave Miss Bundy a 5-0 lead, the San Franciscan fell and skinned her left knee. After self-applied first aid, she went to the service line and won the game, but lost the next for the set and match." "Here is a sweet, unaffected little girl with a bright ribbon holding down a mop of golden ringlets and a disconcerting habit of laughing out loud right on court whenever she takes the notion. 'I love to play. I think it's environment, though, more than heredity. I've been playing my mother, father, and three brothers always. My mother has always been my coach and still is the only one I have.'"

Bundy Cheney became the first American, and only the second foreigner, to win the women's singles title at the Australian Championships. "Nervousness defeated Miss D. Stevenson ... in the final of the women's singes.... In the state of tension in which she played ... it was remarkable that she took as many games as she did. Her customary fluent style deserted her, and it was only under the stimulus of extreme pressure that she forgot her terror and played her shots at her usual speed." Bundy Cheney won the last 5 games of the match.

Nancye Wynne Bolton and Thelma Coyne Long won the women's doubles title for the third consecutive year. The final was "unfortunately conspicuous for poor play ... and considering the reputation of the American pair ... a higher standard of tennis could reasonably have been expected. No feature of the Americans' game merited praise, for they were patently out of touch. Both girls served well, and occasionally Miss Bundy drove brilliantly, but neither player was able to sustain an attack, frequently netting simple drives and volleys. ... The Australian pair were given many opportunities to win the match more convincingly, but they in turn frittered these opportunities away." The Australians needed six set points to win the first set.

The inaugural edition of this tournament was in January of this year, but October became the standard month to hold it. The Pan-American became a prestigious tournament as the de facto championship of Latin America. Margaret Osborne DuPont captured plenty of hearts during this edition. Her beautiful volleying was not enough in women's doubles as a tiring Louise Brough Clapp dragged down their team in the final. Pauline Betz Addie and Bundy Cheney lobbed Brough Clapp to death down the stretch as she had trouble all week with the high altitude of Mexico City.

After being cancelled in 1942 and 1943, this staple of the eastern grass court circuit returned, with 13 out of the top 15 nationally ranked US women. Many first round matches could have been finals at lesser events. The event was run "on a war-time economy," which meant that the grandstand holding thousands had been taken down and grounds crews were kept to a minimum.
