August 13-17, Derbyshire Championships, Buxton, Derbyshire, England (Grass)

Draw of 6

1R = First round

1R: Helen Jackson d. E. Cooper 6-1, 6-0
1R: Bertha Steedman d. A. Viccars 6-2, 7-5

Two players had a bye.

SF: Blanche Hillyard d. Bertha Steedman 6-1, 6-1
--

FI: Helen Jackson d. Blanche Hillyard 6-3, 3-6, 6-3*

* From "Pastime": August 21, 1895: "The tie took place on Saturday morning, and both in the stands and in the half-circle, where the spectators sit on the other side, every available inch was crowded. A more enthusiastic crowd has hardly ever been seen at a tennis tournament, but it needs must be said that apparently they gave more applause to Miss Jackson's winning aces than to Mrs Hillyard's. Why this should be so it is hard to say, as a more sportsmanlike – or shall we say more sportswomanlike – action than Mrs Hillyard's – the holder of the cup – in inviting Miss Jackson to stay with her during the tournament, and chaperone her for the week, it would be hard to find. If Miss Jackson had not been playing at the meeting, the Duke of Devonshire's Cup would have been Mrs Hillyard's own property, as she would have most certainly won it for the third year in succession."

From "Pastime", July 3, 1895: "For the new tournament at Bristol an arrangement had been made with the committee of the county ground at Ashley Down, Bristol, for the use of the cricket ground during the week. Ten capital courts had been marked out without actually interfering with the cricket pitch. The entries all round were very large, and the quality of the players was good."

Mrs E. O’Neill should be Madeline Fisher, that married Edward Armstrong O'Neill in 9 October 1890
