1894 results

1894

The 1890s were tough as lawn tennis struggled to gain a footing from a promising start in the late 1870s. Many draws are no bigger than those of the late 1880s.

With Lottie Dod skipping Wimbledon Blanche Hillyard takes over as champion at the Championships. It is a banner year for Blanche, as she takes the prestigious Irish Championships, the Northern, Wimbledon, Derbyshire, and Sussex. Against those 6 titles she suffered only 2 setbacks. One was a defeat in the final at Northumberland by Helen Jackson. The other loss came at the hands of Charlotte Sterry, who won a match where the Wimbledon champion played under a handicap of one point per game.

In the US Helen Hellwig wins the championship title.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Many thanks to Elegos and Newmark for their contributions to this thread. I also wish to thank Elegos for his contributions.

CR=Challenge Round. Under the challenge round system the previous year's winner, the holder of the title, "sat out" until the challenger won the final (often called the All-Comers Final).

April

April 2-7, British Covered Courts Championships, London, England (Indoors on Wood)
Venue: Queen's Club

Singles (Draw=5)

1R: Edith Austin d. Charlotte Cooper 6-0, 6-1

SF: Austin d. Alice Arbuthnot 6-0 6-1
SF: May Arbuthnot d. Ivy Arbuthnot default

FI: Edith Austin d. May Arbuthnot 2-6 6-4 7-5

No Challenge round as holder Maud Shackle does not defend.

* From "Pastime", April 11, 1894: "[...] Then Miss Arbuthnot, playing with great severity and accuracy, carried off game after game until the umpire announced 5-2 in her favour [in the final set], and the championship appeared to be a certainty for her, especially when she gained the first two strokes in the succeeding game. But never has the old adage that a game is never lost until it is won, proved itself more true than in the present instance. Playing very carefully, and risking little, Miss Austin won the next four strokes, and with them the game.

"In the following game Miss Arbuthnot twice stood within an ace of victory, but the chance was lost, and it returned not. Miss Austin won this game and after that her opponent could win but four strokes in as many games."

This tournament was held at the Queen's Club in London. There was never any women's singles event at the Hyde Park Club Covered Court Championships tournament, which began in 1885. From 1890 to 1894, there were two covered court tournaments at the beginning of the British lawn tennis season, one held at Queen's Club, the other at the Hyde Park Club. In 1894, there were only two matches in the men's singles event at the Covered Court Championships held at the Hyde Park Club. All of this is information is taken from "Pastime" and other contemporary sports papers.

-----

Circa April 2-9, South Australian Championships, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia (Grass)

DF: M. Brown/L. Payne d. E. Parr/Maisie Parr 9-7 6-1

MX: M. Brown/RG Bowen d. Maisie Parr/F. Spiller 7-9 8-6 6-4

Draw Notes:

There are some oddities. What we would call the first round is called the "preliminary round".
The other strange thing are the 6-5 sets. Those are not typos. Yet the final indicates a score of 7-5.

Toulmin= married name of Bertha Townsend.

1894 was the first of several best-of-five-set finals in the women’s doubles event in the coming years.

The mixed doubles final was also played over five sets at this point.

From "Pastime", August 22, 1894: "The eleventh annual open tournament in the Buxton Gardens should have commenced on Tuesday last, but Jupiter Pluvius put a stern veto on the meeting. Both Tuesday and Wednesday were thoroughly wet days, and it was not until Thursday that a match was played. Thence [?] may be imagined, the courts were in a sodden state, and fast play was out of the question. Luckily there are in the Buxton Gardens some excellent gravel courts, and it was on these that the tournament was commenced on Thursday morning."

This tournament was played in place of the North of England Championships this year.

From "Pastime", August 29, 1894: "For the first time since 1885 the annual tournament promoted by the Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association took place last week on the South Cliff ground near Scarborough. During the intermediate years it has been held at Harrogate, Whitby, Leeds and Hull, and four times at Ilkley.

"Owing to the incessant rain which had fallen for some time, play did not commence until two o'clock on the first day, and even then it was found necessary to use the cinder courts. Towards the end of the week the weather took a decided turn for the better, and the twenty grass courts were in fairly good condition."

From "Pastime", September 18, 1894: "There was a distinguished entry for the ladies' singles and as the cup had been won outright by Mrs Hillyard last year, and as lady champion, she was penalised owe 15. The task was, however, on this occasion beyond even her powers. In Miss C. Cooper she met a much improved player and was defeated by two sets to love."

(Note from Elegos7) It was often the custom at Eastbourne to "penalize" the Wimbledon champion in this way. Consequently, some of them lost under this handicap early in the event. An owe 15 meant Hillyard gave up one point per game. Against a player of Chattie Cooper's quality this was too much to overcome.

SF: A Arbuthnot d. Prévost 4-6 6-4 6-1

FI: Ivy Arbuthnot (GB) d. Alice Arbuthnot (GB) 6-2 6-8 6-4

From "Pastime", September 19, 1894: "The Ladies' Cup was competed for this year for the first time, and it was hoped that this additional event would attract more of the crack lady players from England. [...] The final produced a close game, Miss Ivy Arbuthnot defeating her sister Miss Alice by two sets to one, thus becoming the first holder of the cup."
