1890 results

Summary

Many thanks to Elegos and Newmark for their contributions to this thread. I also wish to thank Gee Tee for the Aussie results.

CR=Challenge Round. Under the challenge round system the previous year's winner, the holder of the title, "sat out" until the challenger won the final (often called the All-Comers Final).

Re: 1890 results

January through March

March 10-15, Covered Court Tournament, London, England (Indoors on wood)
Venue: Queen's Club

Singles (Draw=5)

1R: May Jacks d. Ivy Arbuthnot 4-6 6-1 6-4

SF: Jacks d. May Arbuthnot 6-0 6-2
SF: M. Pick d. Alice Arbuthnot 6-4 6-4

FI: May Jacks d. M. Pick 6-0 6-2

From "The Field Lawn Tennis Calendar" (1891): "This, the first of two championships meetings - the second being the [men's] doubles championship to be held on the 24th inst., and following days - was commenced on Monday last in the new covered courts of the Queen's Club. Five ladies sent in their names to contest the ladies' championship, for which Prince Batthany-Strattmann has generously given a silver-gilt bowl of very beautiful design and workmanship. Owing to the small entry for this event, it was decided to postpone the ladies' matches until Thursday. [...]

"On Thursday the first round of the ladies' championship was played, and resulted in a capital match between Miss Jacks and Ivy Arbuthnot, the former winning two out of three well-contested sets, in which some very good play was shown. Miss Jacks owes her victory in this match entirely to her steadiness, as her opponent's strokes were both more severe and of better length. [...]

"On Friday afternoon the semi-final tie in the ladies' championships were played off. Owing to Miss May Arbuthnot having hurt her hand, she was unable to play up to her true form, and was easily beaten by Miss Jacks, who, on the contrary, was playing well. The other match was between Miss M. Pick and Miss A. Arbuthnot. This was much more closely contested, though Miss Pick won two sets in succession, and, curiously enough, both sets were played in a similar manner. The score in both sets was called one, two and three games all, and then four to three, Miss Arbuthnot wins. Afterwards Miss Pick took the next three in succession, both the ninth and tenth in each set being love games.

"Saturday, March 15. With two finals to be played off, it was no wonder that the galleries overlooking the lawn tennis court at the Queen's Club were well patronised today. The final tie in the Ladies' Covered Court Championship was very easily won by Miss Jacks, her opponent, Miss Pick, making no show against her. The tie was played off in the morning, Miss Jacks taking the first eleven games in succession, and then, after losing the next two, securing the second set, and so very easily becoming the lady champion of the covered courts."

Re: 1890 results

April

early April, British Covered Courts Championships, London, England (Indoors on wood)
Venue: Hyde Park Club

FI: May Jacks d. Maud Shackle 6-0 6-1

This was the inaugural women’s singles event at this tournament. A Challenge Cup was on offer for a number years in the women’s singles event. The men's event started in 1885.

-----

April, South Austalian, Adelaide

FI Maisie Parr won

-----

Date unknown, Natal Championship, Durban

FI N. Hickman d. Mabel Grant 6-3 3-6 6-3

-----

Circa mid-April, Ceylon Championships, Nuwara Eliya, Ceylon

FI: Miss Wynniatt d. Miss Watson 6-1 6-1

From "Pastime", May 28, 1890: "Miss Wynniatt, the holder of the Ladies' Championship, was challenged by Miss Watson, but again secured the title."

If true this calls into question out current 1889 result:

Per Jimbo:

Check 1889, because August 18, 2013, you wrote this result:
FI: Mrs Norman d. Miss Watson 5-7, 6-2, 6-3
http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost....5&postcount=23

That denies that Miss Wynniatt was the holder of the Ladies' Championship.

Re: 1890 results

US NATIONAL WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS June 10 to June 14.
--------------------------------
In Philadelphia at Wissahickon Heights. Draw of 8.

1R Ellen Roosevelt d. D. Butterfield 6-0 6-0
1R Mabel Cahill(Ireland)d. Rebecca Lycett 6-1 6-1
1R Lida Voorhees d. F. Gregory 6-1 3-6 6-1
1R Margaret Ballard d. S. Day 6-2 6-1

SF E. Roosevelt d.Cahill 2-6 6-5 3-2 retired
SF Voorhees d. Ballard 6-4 3-6 6-5

Challenge Round Final
Ellen Roosevelt d. Bertha Townsend (holder) 6-2 6-2
--------------------------------
Doubles (Draw=4)

First Round
E. Roosevelt/G. Roosevelt d. Cahill/Voorhees 6-3 6-4
Ballard/Townsend d. Bristol/Gaskill 6-1 6-0

Final
E. Roosevelt/G. Roosevelt d. Ballard/Townsend 6-1 6-2

Ellie (Ellen) Roosevelt, a first cousin of the future President Franklin Roosevelt, becomes the first non-Philadelphian winner. For the final "nearly 2 thousand interested spectators" came to "watch the erractic bounding of felt-covered sphere". 'All have been compelled to confess that the late champion [Townsend] has not been playing nearly so well as last year of late".

Roosevelt kept up a steady reply while Bertha attempted "brilliant shots" that just missed their mark. Ellie raced out to a 5-0 lead in set two before the champ recoverd to win 2 games. "With 40 to love in her [Bertha's] favor it seemed that Dame Fortune would yet deign to smile on her, but, alas! in trying to return a hot one, put two balls in the net in quick succession. Miss Roosevelt then took a brace and finally won the set and the championship."

Early interest focused on Miss Cahill, who was visiting the US from Ireland. All admired "this plucky daughter of Erin" for playing despite doctor's orders not to because of an injured wrist. She came near to defeating Roosevelt in the semis but had to retire in the third set. Cahill's "manly play" was " a revelation to some spectators". Mabel got loads of applause for hitting spectacular volleys. After winning the first set Cahill tired. As the paper put it, "she gave unmistakable evidence of overtraining in the second set." Roosevelt "generously allowed her rival to rest several times, but it was all of no avail."

Re: 1890 results

I notice that you're using MX, MXDF and, in later threads, MD (I presume that's for mixed doubles), etc. In my original threads, which you "requisitioned" and are now using (to be fair to me, at least 90% of these early years are possible in their new form because I looked up the results in the original sources), I used the following abbreviations for the mixed doubles event:

XDSF: mixed doubles semi-final
XDF: mixed doubles final
XDACF: mixed doubles All-Comers' final
XDCR: mixed double Challenge Round

As with other abbreviations, I used them consistently.

--
In my original threads I didn't indicate an Irish player's nationality when he or she played in England, Scotland or Wales because Ireland was under British rule during the period in question. I notice you're now dropping in "Ire" and "Ireland" (in brackets) after certain Irish players' names when they are playing outside of Ireland but still within the British Isles

--

Although "GeeTee" (Graham) contributed a lot of the early Australian results, up to 1915 - I know he's gone beyond the First World War as well - he left out a lot of the women's doubles and mixed doubles results and/or only indicated the winner. I went back to the original sources (Australian newspapers of the period) and added in a lot of results Graham didn't have back when he first submitted the results he found.

--
I also found most of the singles, doubles and mixed results from the New Zealand Championships. I didn't go beyond 1909 where these Australasian results are concerned because that was the point at which I realized what you were doing with the many results I originally found and included in my threads.

--

Mabel Shaw's sister was called Phenie, so Mabel Shaw/Miss Shaw should be Mabel Shaw/Phenie Shaw.

--
The threads look messy/messier when you use dashes of varying lengths in them to separate sections or tournaments, like this:

------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------
------------------------
