Re: 1924 results

Added many of AR's results today and corrected the Nice score.

Still to add: New South Wales.

I am also adding Lenglen's results for 1924 to her career thread. When that is complete I will add them in here.

Other source still not mined: Will's bio (15-30) and a book I have on Kitty McKane.

Re: 1924 results

Using contemporary Australian newspapers, the London "Times", "Lawn Tennis and Badminton" and the 1925 "Ayres' Almanack", I'll add in more results and the correct dates for a number of the tournaments held in 1924, excluding those which took place in North America. I'll also add in some missing first names and, where known, a player's nationality when he or she is playing abroad.

Unless otherwise stated, the surface is grass.

XDF: Henry Mayes (CAN)/Suzanne Lenglen d. Charles Aeschlimann (SUI)/Elizabeth Ryan (USA) 6-4, 1-6, 15-13*

* From "Lawn Tennis and Badminton", February 2, 1924: "The final between Mlle Lenglen and Col. Mayes versus Miss Ryan and Aeschlimann must be one of the longest games on record - the third set running into 28 games before it was finally decided in Mlle Lenglen's and Mayes's favour. The critical point was the sixth game in the third set, when Miss Ryan and Aeschlimann led 3-2 and 40-15 on Aeschlimann's [Mayes's] service. They lost instead of winning that game, and that was the turning point. They again led 4-3, but never afterwards got the lead.

"Miss Ryan played superbly, especially in the second set. Mlle Lenglen played her best game at times, but was uncertain at others. That Miss Ryan was the best of the four I think was the opinion of most of the spectators. It was certainly mine. Aeschlimann was a bundle of nerves. Had he played within 15 of his proper form he and his partner must have won. It was an intensely exciting game and at times we saw some great tennis."
