Re: Describe your playing style !

My game is so Depending on the day certain shots will work better than others

Serve: Solid first serve. I go for placement rather than pace. Second serve has no margin, as I hate seeing a my second serve get ripped for a winner. Very Dokic like

Forehand: Stronger of the two sides. Technique is stable but I hit it very flat for the most part. Like to hit short angles with lots of spin to open up the court.

Backhand: Breaks down like no other hit with a lot of spin, and use the slice a lot.

Volleys: Strongest part of my game. I have sharp reflexes from doing martial arts so that helps.

Movement: I move pretty well for a tall guy.

Re: Describe your playing style !

Time to describe my "game", which has probably regressed in some ways since the last time I wrote about it (probably wrote about it somewhere on this board before).

Serve: ??? It's bad. I aim to just get it in the box, which I usually do really well at. It has a low bounce, which always confuses my opponents and they have to adjust - easy errors sometimes. But most of the time it puts me on the defensive. I can hit a slice on the AD side, I'm a lefty, but its like a loopy slice.

Forehand: My favorite shot to hit, but its definitely hit/miss. I have a pretty western grip, so I have to hit it perfectly to get it really flat. Most of the time its a deep lobspin (at least it aint like Nadal's topspin, so I think a combo of lob/topspin is more accurate). My forehand return is shitty against hard serves, any advice? I usually end up chipping it into the net when I'm rushed. I can hit it pretty good most of the time, like hitting it down the line. Sometimes when I'm not sure what to do with it, I end up poking at it and lobbing.

Backhand: Probably better than my forehand because I usually hit it deep and up the middle, pretty consistent. I return better on this side (aka it goes in the court!) and I can run out wide to hit it pretty well. I actually hit a good two-handed lob on the side, hit 4-5 winners like that last time I played. Not a flashy shot, but its stable.

Volleys: Meh. I have a baaad backhand volley unless its up high, then I use two hands. Forehand volley is OK. I actually do better when its a harder shot - when I have too much time to think, I always overhit/think and miss. Overheads are BAD, just like my serve.

I'm pretty fast, but I don't get myself into the right spot all the time - not proper distance from ball, a little slow to react to shots short in the court. Im in good shape though, and don't usually get tired (until after the match haha), so most of the time I wear down whoever I'm playing, which is actually pretty fun. Not a lot of finesse or touch - slice is way too iffy to try unless I'm up 40-0 in a game. Dropshot is meh, but at my level a bad dropshot can still win points.

Re: Describe your playing style !

Ryan I too struggled with my serve but now its a lot more reliable thanks to the information I posted earlier in the thread..I just thought I should share it with people because having a bad serve is just so fustrating when everyone else is blasting 120mph serves!

Re: Describe your playing style !

Yeah, I read that towel trick - sounds easy enough to try. I know what I'm SUPPOSED to do, I literally just can't coordinate it on my first, and on the second its all arm.

My toss needs to go higher, and I need to bend my knees more. I'll work on that with the towel.

Re: Describe your playing style !

I'm basically a pusher

Forehand: It usually hit it with a lot of height over the net. I also commonly use a forehand slice which throws alot of my opponents off. Occasionally i can flatten it out but i rarely hit a winner off it.

Backhand: i have a good slice again, and generally hit the ball with alot of height over the net. I would likely go for a harder shot of the backhand.

Serve: at times i can produce a good fast first serve. My second serve isn't anything special but i rarely df.

Movement: I am fast mover and i like to think i have good anticipation of shots, i always try to get every shot back

Mental strength: I comeback alot of the time win matches, but when i build a lead usually i lose a couple games before doing anything. I like to think that this part of my game is my biggest strength.

Drop shots and Lobs: i usually hit most of winners of these in a match. they are definitely my best shots and i can usually pull them of when i need to

Re: Describe your playing style !

Technically I'm solid in everything but I just lack athleticism and a solid serve, which why I'm stuck at the bottom of super champs.

Serve: Weakest part of my game, my first serve is a heavy spin serve, my second serve is the exact same thing, except less pace.

Forehand: Technically proficient, I can hit many DTL winners with this, I can hit winners on the short/approach. I just can't rip it fast since I'm not really strong in the upper body or arms.

Backhand: Technically perfect, even I have to say. It really is my biggest weapon. I can drive it down the line and cross court. (Though I like DTL more, it's more of a wow shot) I think my backhand is the only reason I'm in supers. I'm really aggressive off the return of serve w/ my backhand. I have a two handed slice push like Wozniacki's.

Volleys: I only approach the net on a perfect approach. I'm too scared of getting passed. I usually just do a punch volley on my forehand, and a swing volley on my backhand. Drop volleys are difficult for me, I have little to no finesse on drop shots. (They are basically short lobs)

Re: Describe your playing style !

I really lack strength but I'm consistent enough and I place the ball well with a lot of variety so it makes up for strength.

Serve: Probably, my best shot. First serve is flat and low- I usually get very pathetic returns to this which is helpful. Second serve- I spin it in with a little kick & I'm trying to add more punch to it though.

Forehand: I have a lot of different grips for my forehand- i usually like my flat, hard one. but occasionally i'll put some top spin in and go for some angle. i'm usually to scared to go DTL unless it's doubles where i have something to aim for.

Backhand: in middle school this was my favorite shot. my motion was nice and got it in the court really deep and i had good aim. no it's really mediocre...sometimes it can be heavenly but sometimes i just guide it over-it just feels awkward at times. i think my toughest ones are the high bouncing- i just can't really plant my feet well enough like the low ones.

Volleys: volleys are super easy for me. it just comes natural. maybe because i watch a lot of doubles. idk. but i anticipate well and have quick reflexes, and i put it away with ease most of the time.

Movement: again, this is just natural. i know where they're gonna hit it for the most part. i can cover the entire court pretty easily, unless it's some godly dropshot.

Also another thing is to get a fluid service motion..this excerise helps

Go get a towel and tie a knot in it. The towel should be about the length of your real racket the knot represents the racket head so you would hold the towel from the other side like its a tennis racket. Practice serving with the towel the objective of this is to make sure the knot in the towel dosent touch your back if it dosent you have a fluid motion and if it does you need to fix your motion to make it more fluid.

I hope that made sense If not I'll show you a video on how to do it
Could you show the video if you don't mind?

Yuliya. That video cracks me up everytime I see it.

I actually modeled my service motion on Serena from when I was much younger, turns out to be the best thing I ever did.

Re: Describe your playing style !

I hit the balls really flat, including my serve, so I have no variety at all. My weakest part of the game is probably my movement and volley. I can't volley to save my life. My forehand is probably the strongest part of my game, or my serve, my backhand is fine I guess. I don't know if I am mentally strong or not, I've came back from 2-5 down to win the set, but when I lose a close tie-break in the first set I always get bagelled or breadsticked in the second.

I hate pushers and counter punchers. I always always lose against them no matter how many times I play them and I have absolutely no idea why. They just get every single of my ball back, and especially those who likes to slice, I can't play with them and my game is destroyed. I hate people who slice every single ball, even though I know it's gonna be a slice, I struggle with it. And drop shots are , I can't get to them, ever. But I can play baseliners pretty well, I've beaten many. And I can do pretty well against those players who likes to come to the net. I can lob above their head (seeing their expressions are the best feeling ) or hit passing shots pretty easiler, or sometimes I feel so much anger towards my opponent that I would just smack the ball as hard as I can into their face - usually they just turn away though so it hits their back or something.

Well the biggest problem I have with my volleys are reaching the low ones, I mean i'm quite a tall guy as well so it's hard to reach down and get them over I end up netting nearly all of them.

Re: Describe your playing style !

Hi, I'm new here ! Thought this was the best thread to start with. :]
I wish I was a bit taller first of all, I'm over 1.70cm but deffinetly height adds to power, so that would actually make my game like way better. My style is agressive, since my groundstrokes are all technically great and I don't use much spin. But there's so much to improve becuase, I don't really move that well. I have great anticipation but that's just not something to rely on, is it ?
My favourite shot is the ace. Seriously, there's no better feeling ! I've got a style of forehand that I don't think anybody else has, I mean, in execution terms, with great technique, I can place it anywhere with the desireable pace. As for the backhand, it's even better. Almost never fails me. I've played tournaments the last years a lot and I found out my match mentality was no where. But now that I've grown up a little more then when I was 11 and 12, I fight like crazy and if I build momentum I never leave my comfort zone. I'm not a really good volleyer cause of my movement, but I can drop volley really well, as well as drop shot from the baseline. What's characteristic about me, I think, is that I never look at my coach and I don't get influenced from the crowd. I don't really get mad, sometimes I smile my errors off but nothing else... I just love tennis, how could I treat it bad... !
