Look, it really depends on what you define as having 'slam winning potential'.

If Safina has reached 3 slam finals, I call that slam winning potential. She's basically one match away from winning a slam 3 times.

Wozniacki and Jankovic both reached a grand slam final each. I would call them both as having slam winning potential.

Your judgement of whether these girls have slam-winning potentials is clearly clouded by your disdain/contempt of their abilities.

Re: When will the next Star emerge in women's tennis?

We may not see it happen until the big guns of this generation retire. Sometimes, there's a nice passing of the baton in sports. Other times, there's a messy transition of power. This looks to be a messy transition. It's a short-term problem because it's hurting the game's attractiveness right now (among other things) but a new player will eventually emerge. She may not be old enough to even be playing in the serious juniors yet. She could be 12. I would not be at all surprised if she came out of Asia. As I've said before, I've seen a lot of young Asian-American and Hispanic-American kids gravitating toward the game and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some great players from those demographics either.

Re: When will the next Star emerge in women's tennis?

I think Azarenka will break through and win a slam soon. She has an above the ordinary physical game, but it will just depend on the mental aspect of her game.

Re: When will the next Star emerge in women's tennis?

Azarenka looks promising, she just needs to gain mental toughness. Melanie Oudin...... maybe.....

I think it is sad that there is no current definitive prodigy in the game. Back then we had Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova......

If they win a slam, it's more likely to be because of a lack of any real top player.

I get what the thread starter is trying to say. There's no real upstart that has the potential to dominate the tour. Safina may have reached three GS finals, she's not exactly someone other players fear. She's never considered the favourite before the start of a GS.
The times Sharapova won her slams, she was on a mission. You had to wonder who could beat her because she looked so dominant. Same for a lot of the slams Serena and Venus won, and Kim and Justine.

(* have to put quotes in italics since for some reason I can't post replies when there's a quote in it)

Re: When will the next Star emerge in women's tennis?

I had hopes for Lisicki after Wimbledon last year as at least her game was exciting to watch, but she seems to be suffering big time with injuries. The way she plays she's likely to be very hit and miss also.

I'd love nothing better than for Robson to become a big star, she certainly has the off-court personality for it. Even though she's still young her movement is a huge weakness though, and she seems to pick up injuries which have been setting her back.
