Re: Maia Lumsden

Maia likewise yet to drop a set and faces the equally dominant conqueror of Jazzi, French person Theo Gravouil, in the semi.

EDIT: yeah, sorry, there was a very poorly executed implied reference to the Taylor thread there. As Chris says, we're talking about the Junior Orange Bowl.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Maia has been very impressive this week, and in all honesty, has the beating of the other semifinalists.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Another straight set win and she's through to the final to face her friend, Gabriella Taylor. What a great week for British tennis!

Re: Maia Lumsden

After the long winter of British women's tennis, is a thaw coming at last?

Malta Marsa, G4

Final

Maia LUMSDEN (GBR) [5] 6-3 6-2 Melissa Ishuan IFIDZHEN (RUS)

(OT except to my theme, Katie Dyson won the doubles.)

Turns out there are two low grade ITF juniors in Malta this year; the past few years the venues have alternated, but this year they're both being played. Maia is 2nd on the acceptance list for the follow-up G5 (San Michel) next week, although many of the other Brits that played this week's event are skipping it.

Re: Maia Lumsden

A slightly expanded explanation from Maia of the retirement: http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/...msden.21501201

Quote:
"I was really enjoying it, playing well and then suddenly it happened," said Lumsden, whose fellow Glaswegian Anna Brogan had been eliminated from the competition on Saturday night. "My left eye went completely blurry and my legs started getting a bit shaky. It might have been a migraine, because my head was really sore, or it could have been low sugar.

"It was really weird but a similar thing happened last week when I wasn't on the court, I lay down for 10 minutes and it got better. Maybe I should have eaten more before the match, but I am not sure really. Last week when it happened, I got a little bit scared, but this week I just thought 'oh no' because I knew I wouldn't be able to continue. But hopefully if I can get my ranking up I can have a lot more junior slams," added the teenager who is now coached by Mark Walker.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Maia won 3 out of the four events (draws--partnering Galfi for the dubs) in the South African G2 swing. Her only loss was to Mraz, and was avenged in the second week.

Re: Maia Lumsden

An RG aperetivo...

Maia has won thru Qs and 2 rounds of the Trofeo Bonfiglio, which I think is probably the Italian Open (so there's also bonus points). Grade A, anyway.

Currently playing world number 10, Sen Shiyue, who Maia beat about 2 weeks ago. Live scores here...

Just taken set 1, 7-6 (3).

Re: Maia Lumsden

...and sorry for jinxing it.

She loses 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.

Still a very good week; I think she gets 62.50 ranking points, and drops only 20, on Monday. Very close to her highest ranking.

Re: Maia Lumsden

Tennis ace Maia (16) on her way to Wimbledon

Quote:
One of the brightest young tennis players to come out of Scotland is hoping to make her mark at the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Championships.

Maia Lumsden (16), from Bearsden, will be competing in the under-18 event, which kicks off next week.

This will be the first time the Bearsden Academy pupil has competed at the event.

A spokesperson for Tennis Scotland, the governing body for the sport in Scotland, said: “Everyone in Scotland involved in tennis is absolutely delighted for her and we are sure she will do everything possible when the tournament comes along.

“This will be the first time Maia has taken part in Junior Wimbledon."
Always worth repeating that it's her first appearance, especially if you're trying to convince people of something that's not actually true.
