Should thank Misa for her generosity. Without her going, Kirilenko might not be on the banner.

Molik arrives in Auckland;
looks to relaunch her career

Former world number one Alicia Molik has arrived in Auckland this morning ahead of the ASB Classic hoping to relaunch her career after a devastating Season 5 - both form wise and in regards to her personal life. The greatest player to ever play the game was met at Auckland International Airport by thousands of screaming fans before making her way to Mount Smart Stadium for her first press conference of the year. In front of the biggest crowd at any tennis related event in history (an astonishing 47,000 Kiwi's turned up), Alicia addressed questions from journalists and fans alike about her troubled year and her desire to turn it all around for Season 6. A copy of the interview transcript can be found below:

Mount Smart Stadium packed to the rafters with Molik supporters!

Q: Alicia, welcome back to Auckland! How does it feel to be back?
AM: Thanks so much! It feels amazing to be back in New Zealand. I always play so well here and am hoping to really kick start my year with another strong showing.

Q: Season 5 was a poor season by your standards, what happened?
AM: Yeah it was a tough year. I started the year playing decent, finishing runner-up here and winning in Sydney, but I never felt like I found any true form last season. I struggled with a lot of things throughout the year and unfortunately tennis took a back seat and that showed in my results. So yeah, a rough year.

Q: Can you tell us why it was so tough?
AM: Just a combination of things really. I had a lot of niggling injuries throughout the year and had to deal with a lot in my personal life. I didn't have much motivation last year, I just glided along and rocked up to tournaments. You know, I think I have definitely been the games best strategic player for the past three or so seasons before the last and that was something I prided myself on. But last year, I really didn't put any effort into my game; no effort into the tour.

Q: You were at the tournaments though? What do you mean by 'no effort'?
AM: You know, I didn't train. I didn't check up on my opponents. I rarely changed tactics between tournaments and barely noticed what I was doing out there. In fact, I looked back at my results the other day and found that I hadn't even remembered most of them, I think that explains a lot - especially for a player who is normally so committed and into the game of tennis.

Q: What was the low point of the year for you?
AM: Most people would expect me to say it was losing the number one ranking. But in all honesty, I barely noticed it. I barely noticed anything from the Australian Open through to the end of the year. But the low point was definitely Antwerp. I have won twice there before and love playing in Belgium and yet I couldn't even walk on court. I had never given a walkover before but I was in such a mess I was too embarrassed to walk out on court, my game was all over the place. So that was the toughest moment for sure.

Q: You finished the year solid. A finals appearance in Madrid?
AM: Yeah I did. I was proud of that. Again, I was not really keeping tabs on it all, but I think it speaks volumes that I can play far below my best and still make the finals on the one of the years biggest tournaments.

Q: Was there a highlight for you last year?
AM: I mean, looking back, for sure I was very proud to win the title in Amelia Island - my first on clay. That was a big moment, I just wish I had really taken it in and celebrated such a milestone in my career.

Q: In each of the two seasons prior to last, you won 5 titles and picked up the awards for 'Best Plexi Player' and 'Player of the Season'. Disappointing to lose these amazing runs?
AM: Sure it is. But that is why I am back with my head in the game this season. I feel like if I actually put some effort in, I can get back up to the top and win some big titles again.

Q: That was my next question. A record 39 weeks at number one. You really think you can get back up there?
AM: Of course. I have the game, I have the head. It is just a matter of being committed. No girl on the tour wants to face me early in a tournament, they all know I have what it takes to be the best player in the game again.

Q: There are some tough girls on tour. Thoughts on some of them?
AM: Yeah there are some girls playing amazing tennis at the moment. Misa Krajicek is a girl who I have always struggled with but we have played most of our matches on grass where she is an incredible opponent. Sharapova is another great player. I have a great record against her but I'm tipping her for another big year.

Q: And what about Tamarine Tanasugarn? The two of you have played a record 21 times now. What is it like playing her again and again?
AM: Yeah Tammy is one of the few girls as well as myself who has been here on the circuit since the first tournament. She is a top player and we always have amazing matches. I definitely look forward to adding to our historical head to head!

Q: Well best of luck this season Alicia. You have only lost once here in the past three years so lets hope you can continue with your amazing New Zealand form and play well.
AM: Yeah for sure, hopefully I can give back to all these amazing people who turned out today and really put in a top showing for you all! Thanks.

Venus Set for Auckland
Williams seeks first tour victories leading into Australian Open

Venus Williams stretches during a practice before the ASB Classic Open
*
AUCKLAND -- Venus Williams has arrived in New Zealand for the first event of the year on the ATC tour. Williams first joined the tour late last season and lost her only match played, in three sets to Marion Bartoli of France.
*
This year, Williams has said she is eager to jump start her career, which she believes is rising quickly. "I'd love to get a couple of matches under my belt before I head into the Australian Open," Williams said after her warm up this morning. "Anything to help show me where to improve in my game is a good thing. Sometimes that means losing a few times before finding your groove."
*
Williams said she didn't want to speak about her three set loss to Bartoli, claiming it was still to painful for her. She did, however, discuss her draw this week. "I think it's a tricky section, if I'm honest," she confided. Williams will open against the fourth seeded Alicia Molik, who has won this title twice. "She's a former number one and clearly a vet on tour. I have so much respect for her. I'll just try to focus on my game and see what happens!"
*
Williams and Molik are expected to play on Center Court.
