Re: 2010 Wildcards

New Haven MDWC's:
Dementieva
Ivanovic
Stosur

Why cant they enter on time?????

13/38 MDWCs to Americans this year(excluding US Open)
Thats pathetic if you ask me considering we actually have some good talent coming up.

Re: 2010 Wildcards

Well Stosur because she didn't plan playing here, but she withdrew from Cincy and Montreal due to injury, so still wants match play before the Open, so she got one. Dementieva just came back from injury and needs all the matches she can get too. Ivanovic, I don't know why

Re: 2010 Wildcards

Wildcards for Us Open

1. Australian (Ferguson)
2. French
3. Girls 18's (Rogers)
4. US Wildcard Playoff (Julia Boserup, Madison Brengle, Beatrice Capra, Irina Falconi, Krista Hardebeck, Nicole Gibbs, Alison Riske)
5.
6.
7.
8.

So the remaining 4 WC's will likely be distributed between: NCCA Champ Gullickson, Vandeweghe, McHale, Stephens, and Hampton.

One of those 5 won't get a MDWC...I'm 100% sure that the USTA already knows which girl isn't getting one though, and I'm sure she knows as well.

Re: 2010 Wildcards

I don't get why they wouldn't include that one girl in the play off though. It's most likely Gullickson, which sucks that she doesn't even get a chance at one.

Sloane is up in the air, she has shown she can handle the WTA tour, but she had her big chance to earn her WC at the 18s, but lost.
Then you have all these girls 18s playing again for a chance at a Main Draw WC along with Riske, who IMO should get it and this WC playoff is stupid since Riske should get it she made a WTA event SF and took a set off Sharapova. But it gives her a chance to earn her spot.

Which brings us to Chelsey who has been given no opportunity to earn one, while all these other girls are getting chances left and right. Whether because she already has one guaranteed, maybe, but I doubt it.

I completely echo your sentiments. I don't know why 5 of the girls who played the 18s are getting another chance for a wildcard. It devalues winning Nationals. And therein lies where I think USTA needs to make some changes.

I've been thinking about the US Open Wildcards a lot, so I'll just ramble on the few things I have come up with.

So, you have 8 wildcards to give to the main draw of the Open. It feels to me as though the novelty of earning a MDWC into the Open has completely worn off on these girls. They expect to get one, and if they don't get it the first time they expect another shot at it. A lot of these girls are fed with a golden spoon by the USTA. Here's what I would do:

1. French

2. Australian
3. Girls 18's Champion
*Here is where I would make some changes
*I would require all age-eligible girls who are interested in receiving a wild card into the US Open (either MD or Qualifying) to play this event.
*You need to get the strongest field possible for this tournament, and I think one way to do it is to say "Hey look, if you want to get a WC into the open, you play your nation's championships. If you choose to bypass it for whatever reason, know that it can and will be used against you when it comes to wild card deliberation.
*Obviously there are going to be some exceptions (i.e. an age-eligible girl is playing in a WTA tournament). Of course this would be taken into account.
4. College Player
*I think awarding one American college player a year a MDWC really gives the collegiate athletes something to work and strive for.
*I say you first award it to the NCAA Singles winner if she is American.
*If the NCAA tourney winner is not American, then I award the MDWC to the season ending highest ranked American.
5. Another Girls 18's participant
*While she may not have won the tournament, assuming all of our best juniors did play Nationals, I presume there will be at least one or two other girls who did not win who the USTA still thinks is deserving of a wild card.
*I think this girl should have had a very strong showing at Nationals, as well as a strong summer professional record.
6. Non-age eligible
*This type of wild card would be for someone like Jamie Hampton who could not play Nationals due to her age.
*However, strong professional results over the season indicate she would be competitive in the MD of the Open
7. Non-age eligible
*This type of wild card would be for someone like Alison Riske who could not play Nationals due to her age.
*However, strong professional results over the season indicate she would be competitive in the MD of the Open
8. Playoff
*This could be reserved for 8 women who have no other avenue of obtaining a MDWC
*This WC would most likely not go to a young girl but perhaps some "older" girls who are still capable of competing at the highest level but just need some help to get into the main draw

This analysis We should petition to make this the formula for WCs. It's the perfect mix of youth, experience, college, international ties, and keeping the US Open "open."
