Re: 2011 USTA National Championships - San Diego, CA (EL + Seeds)

TOURNAMENT PREDICTIONS

FIRST QUARTER
Lauren Davis has it pretty easy. I saw Lynn Chi play earlier this summer and, while she's solid enough, Davis will have no problem with her. Jeukeng/Crawford will be an interesting R4 match, these are two girls that have posted some pretty solid results early on in their careers. I think Crawford should come through and then go down to Davis. The bottom half of this quarter is dominated by Grace Min and Vicky Duval. I'll be completely floored if they don't meet in R5. As to who wins that one, I think Duval might have a slight edge but it should be a good one either way. Davis and Min/Duval will be a good QF too, but I expect Lauren Davis to come through this quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
Taylor Townsend is a girl that has been coming on strong in 2011. Made the semis of a 50K in Carson, taking out last year's champion here, Shelby Rogers. Unseeded USC recruit Sabrina Santamaria should probably take down #17 seed Sydney Campbell but neither of these girls should take out Madison Keys. Townsend might be able to grab a set, but Keys will come through. The next part of this draw is BRUTAL. Gabbie Andrews, Brooke Austin, Anna Mamalat, Denise Starr, and Hayley Carter are all formidable players. Gabbie just won the 18s National Clay Courts (at 14) and definitely has her work cut out for her if she wants to go deep here. She should make R5 easily enough but Austin/Mamalat/Starr/Carter will definitely test and possibly take her out. This is the toughest quarter. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Brooke Austin will cause plenty of upsets and reach the semis.

THIRD QUARTER
Nicole Gibbs is the big name here. There are plenty of other good players in this quarter (Harrison, Collins, Vickery, Melichar, Nauta, Tsay, Laurente) but none of them are in Gibbs' league. She had a disappointing result against Brengle in Vancouver last week but from what I've seen of her in the NCAA tournament and at the Stanford WTA, she's seeing the ball very well. I'm taking Nicole Gibbs over Danielle Collins in the quarters. Catherine Harrison became a personal favorite of mine when I saw her play this summer so I'm hoping she can somehow fight her way through to the quarters but I don't see it happening.

FOURTH QUARTER
Weak. So weak. Krista Hardebeck hasn't been winning a whole lot of matches as of late and she got the easiest of the 5-8 seeds in Kyle McPhillips. Pusher extraordinaire Christina Makarova and lackluster future UNC recruits Ashley Dai and Whitney Kay are in this quarter along with tough unseeded players Chanelle Van Nguyen, Monica Turewicz, and Hannah King. Chanelle got SUCH a tough draw with #12 seed Robin Anderson in the second round. That seems like a tough one for Robin on paper but I think she'll come through her little section before losing to Krista Hardebeck in the quarters. Krista will have plenty of time with her draw to work her way into form.

I think Sloane should be in line to get a MDWC anyway...I think if she plays here she won't win it. She doesn't seem to do well when she is the big favorite and a lot of expectations are on her. She should let her San Diego result speak for itself and not let the USTA's decision be influenced by a loss here to Davis or Gibbs.

Re: 2011 USTA National Championships - San Diego, CA (EL + Seeds)

Madison is the only one I see who could do well with the WC. Maybe Lauren depending on her draw. Krista, Nicole, and Grace who are the other favorites to win this I just don't see winning many games against most of the MD players.

Looking forward to seeing how this tournament plays out. The field is really deep. May the best girl win

Re: 2011 USTA National Championships - San Diego, CA (Draws)

Draw posted. I'll do my predictions later...let me know if you catch any mistakes. I'm sure I made a few, that was a lot of typing.

Re: 2011 USTA National Championships - San Diego, CA (Draws)

I wasn't looking for mistakes but I did notice there is no seed by Gabby's name. Interesting draw, I'll post comments in a little bit.

Re: 2011 USTA National Championships - San Diego, CA (Draws)

Thanks, fixed.

The bottom half of the fourth quarter is a TOUGH section (Austin, Mamalat, Starr, Carter).

Word.

Robin has a tough draw too. Unseeded Chanelle first round (after a bye)!, unseeded Turewicz, then Makarova. She could have had a tougher 5-8 seed than McPhillips, but still, tough road (i.e. no really easy matches).

I would say Krista has the easiest quarter.

Looking forward to your predictions Greg.

Re: 2011 USTA National Championships - San Diego, CA (Draws)

I think this is a great field! Didn't realize that Pegula wasn't playing until I saw the draw I wonder why. She doesn't really play juniors, but the stakes are so high here!

My predictions:

I think Davis, Keys, Gibbs, and Hardebeck should all make the quarters comfortably. Duval will upset Min. Andrews will be tested by Austin but make it through I think. I have a sneaking suspicion that Collins may sneak through her quarter, even though Vickery has been having better results these last few months. Robin will get through Kyle in a tough match I think.

Will reevaluate at the quarters

Yea I'm curious as to why Pegula decided not to play as well.

Predictions:

R16

(1) Davis def. (17) Crawford - Lauren should make it through to the quarters comfortably
(6) Min def. (16) Duval - Grace will have an interesting match with Hibi and this match up is intriguing. Duvla has a lot of game and has quite a lot of junior success lately, but I still like Grace's chances. I'd like to see Grace start to play more tournaments.

(3) Keys def. (9) Townsed - TT has a nice game but she's still young and Madison will be too much
(7) Andrews def. (13) Austin - Tough section with Mamalat, Starr, and Carter. But I think Austin will get through and will have a great match with Gabby.

(14) Collins def. (5) Vickery - Danielle has been playing very well lately (she just beat Gabby 5 and 3) and Sachia...idk. Plus, I had to pick an upset somewhere!
(4) Gibbs def. (10) Tsay - An All-Stanford battle Too bad Ellen had to play Nicole because I think she could have done some damage elsewhere. But Nicole is playing great.

(12) Anderson def. (8) McPhillips - Robin has a very tough draw with Van Nguyen, Turewicz, and then Makarova. But Robin has been playing very well on the ITF circuit and I expect her to get through.
(2) Hardebeck def. (15) Kay - Krista has the easiest quarter and should advance easily.

QF's

(1) Davis def. (6) Min - I'm tempted to call the upset here but I'm not sure.
(3) Keys def. (7) Andrews - I love Gabby and I know she won their last encounter, but I'm going with Madison on this one...

(4) Gibbs def. (14) Collins - Nicole is in good form right now and in a different class than Danielle.
(2) Hardebeck def. (12) Anderson - Robin may put up a fight but I think Krista gets through

I chose the top 4 seeds

SF's
(3) Keys def. (1) Davis - Lauren winning this would be too obvious so I think Madison will cause the upset
(2) Hardebeck def. (4) Gibbs - Should be a great match. I like Krista to come through though.

Final
(2) Hardebeck def. (3) Keys - I think Krista can really play to Madison's weaknesses.

Zootennis reported that Sloane requested one, but it was nearly impossible (too late) to accommodate a slot for her. USTA would probably give Sloane the WC to the USO anyway.

Krista! It would be so epic if she wins although I wouldn't say that she's in the best of form as of late.
