That doesn't seem very "restrictive." It seems fair.

Don't you think this has something to do with the fact that she is 16 - only 5 top 100 players have played as few events in the past year or less and some, like Ka. Pliskova, have played more than twice as many (32 compared to 15) so it's natural that their good results are more spread across the season

Anyway, still bummed about what happened today, for some reason I really thought this will be the place where Donna would lift her first WTA winner's trophy. But as many of you pointed out well, very few of us ever thought this would happen at the start of the week, so kudos to Donna for a wonderful result. Another encouraging fact is that she gave a really good resistance and ended the match with a tight scoreline, eventhough former #5 and a grasscourt specialist was on the other side.

What was less pretty to witness today was in my opinion Donna's serving, which I find hard to believe was at 52% by the end of the match - seemed even worse to me. Yes, I agree she was also too passive and let her opponent take the full charge of the match, and there's not much good to expect in such circumstances, especially if you're facing a seasoned veteran.

Donna once again showed a great ability to hold her mental focus in tough conditions and an amazing fighting spirit. For that, I think she deserved more, at least maybe a third set. Oh well, she'll have to find a way to deal with such tough losses as they'll surely be many more of them in the years to come.

Somebody asked how do we think her game compares to the same time last year - I have to say it's much better, probably even a complete layman would see the difference (after all, I'm not exactly an expert...). Her backhand is considerably better now and it can come very useful to her, while there's also a noticable difference in her movement. What little of her net skills we saw this week also seem much better than anything we witnessed last summer.

So overall, it's a bitter-sweet feeling for me and it'll probably take some time until it sinks to us what she's done this week.

Well done Donna!

Re: Donna Vekic

With respect to the age restriction, I think she gets 14 plus the four merited increases over the next year

Donna played great, with a little luck she could have won the match, i guess that tie break was crucial, still good fight, she didnt break when she lost close tiebreak, she continued fighting, good job!
Why are there those restrictions? why cant younger player just play as many tournaments as she wants?

Re: Donna Vekic

Donna did well in this final, she fought hard and result was very close.
It's just a great experience for her, one from which she will learn a lot.
Her game improved drasticly since Tashkent last year and that's a great sign of talent which she possesses.
I believe she could finish this year in top 50 like she wanted.

It's actually 16 + 4 merited increases. So really it's 20 events, because obviously she'll be ranked high enough to use her merited increases in bigger events.

To prevent players from being used as slave labor by their psychotic parents whose lust for money has no limits. There were horrible cases in the past (Capriati is mentioned in that regard most often).

You do understand that on top of making up for almost 500 points that are still to come off of her ranking she'd have to earn another 250 or so to make it? I sure do hope you're right, but it a lot even for the greatest optimists among us

Oh yeah, almost forgot...

I thought you ignored me

Anyway, a nice point you make actually and as I have said, she is a good player. I just don't think she deserves her current rank but everyone is entitled to their own opinion

If you wanna see where she could/should finish, look at her place on the race: 66
So really, to stay where she is now would be a good achievement but it will be an effort to defend her Tashkent points

Re: Donna Vekic

I have to go back a little to the discussion of grass courts and tournaments on them...anyone knows why countries which have quite a few such courts don't host tournaments on them - here we heard that Australia has many and I think I've heard Japan also has some? It's really strange that there aren't more events being played on this surface, on which the sport developed in the first place. I know these courts cost much more to maintain in proper condition, but some tennis association do have funds to build and maintain them but are reluctant to do so.

Re: Donna Vekic

That in your face fist pump was totally unnecessary, also she has been getting some signals from the coach who was sitting in the crowd at those momments, that not-up situation was pretty clear as well. But, you gotta understand her, she is an experienced player, and just didn't wanna lose to 16 year old player, lot of it was at stake.
