The assumption is that for every player who picks up points in the upcoming tournaments, there's a player who loses points that they couldn't defend from last year.

Well there will most likely still be some players withdrawing from the maindraw anyway (at least 3-4) so she should be fine if she wins her next match. I'd rather be 100% sure though and I'm sure Donna would like to be too.

...and for every player who withdraws, you can assume one player is coming back with a protected ranking

It's probably because, if I'm not mistaken, under the age eligibility rule doubles count separately against a player's maximum number of tournaments.

Either they count tournaments alone (ie doesn't matter what you play in that tournament) or they don't count doubles at all.
But I'm 100% sure playing doubles with singles has no effect for AER.

No, she's allowed up to 12 Singles and 12 Doubles + 4 Merited Increases in both
